Ever dye your climbing shoes?

Has any one ever dyed there climbing shoes here?

See, some people (my girl friend) is/are very particular about how the shoes look as well as function. Black goes with everything so If I could get a pair of Mytoes, Cliffs, or climbingshoes.com (the ones that fit and function) I could then dye them black. (so they will be an “acceptable color”)

My main concern is that it may dry out the leather, and it may also be blotchy if I am not very careful about how I paint them. But with a color like black I can always add more dye…

Any suggestions?

Nope, and I've never met someone that actually cared about their climbing shoe color.

Maybe this is one of those times where you tell her to get a life. ;)

Although you gotta pick your battles when you're in a relationship.

My answer to a gf that asked that question would either be

A) No, you can't dye them. Then make up some excuse about the glue holding the rubber onto the leather

or

B) tell her to try it out but on her shoes only

or

C) tell her to go for it but a sharpie is the suggested method of dying your shoes.

Well Bryan, thanks for the reply, but it's not a matter of "not having a life" or a relationship battle. She loves climbing, I was just hoping I could make the shoes more comfortable for her. It's not something she asked me to do.

I was just hoping I could make the shoes more comfortable for her.

Oh all right...I'm in a playful mood 'cause the week's over...

If you want to make the shoes more comfortable for her, explain that her toes do NOT have to be painfully curled when she puts them on :)

That should work a lot better than dyeing the shoes.

But really...she truly cares about what the shoes look like?

Shoot...I'm on the look out for the ugliest stuff I can wear to the crag. I want a pair of brushed nylon pants that have a purple/yellow/green plaid pattern on them.

But alas...they don't seem to exist.

Does she make sure her lipstick compliments her crag clothes as well?

i would think any of the normal shoe dyes at the store would bleed if her feet perspired, which they will..thus dying her feet black...i would think after awhile it would stop happening though

buy her a pair of 5.10 hueco's they are an off white...they'll go with anything...

Thanks climbinganne!

The first real reply!

To the others: color = comfort in the sence that if the shoes are not an outrages attention grabbing color the person wearing them will feel at ease and more comfortable. personally I have a pair of florescent green shoes and a pair of purple shoes, and all my gear is all sorts of wild colors, even my harness. I don't care about the colors personally, but some people do.

never died climbing shoes, but when i played football in HS we would die our shoes to our school colors and it never effected the leather. The only negative side effect is that it bleeds alot more than the original color We would normally have to redye the shoes mid season, but our shoes experienced a lot more water and worse conditions than climbing shoes ever would.

The song is by a young rap artist named Nelly...song is titled "Air Force Ones." Which are a pair of Nike brand shoes. Not that anyone cares...but i have a friend that bought a pair of Air Force Ones made by Louis Vitton. Crazy!

This thread is funny...

but I digress. Some shoes are already black- the Mad Rock Shark comes to mind, as does the Boreal Matrix and the old 5.10 Diamond- but black shoes have always had the negative side effect of being blazing hot in the sun. I'd think that'd be more uncomfortable than fretting about issues of fashion.

Anyway, the real, like, issue is making sure your sporty bra top is totally cute and is, like, flattering to your rolls... um, curves. And girlz, you gotta make sure to get comfortable climbing with your hair down and flapping all sexy in the breeze, in case a photographer is taking pictures. Rah!

Black shoes are awesome for really hot and sunny days. You wouldn't want your feet to be all cool and comfortable would you? Forget those unhip factory stock colors...fashion over function fo' life.

Boo-ya! Finally someone who knows what shes talking about. Forget the shoe fashion...he needs to make sure his girl is sporting non-black pants (black pants hide the figure) AND he needs to instruct her in proper thong wearing technique.

Forget smearing and handjamming, get her to practice making sure the thong is sticking out of the pants before climbing.

And bonus points if she can keep the tag sticking out of the thong for the entire climb.

Word...

And everything must coordinate. Lip gloss, scrunchie (for after the photographer leaves), eye shadow, purse (where else is she going to keep her chalk) and choes.

But remember, after Memorial Day, its White Shoes all the way till labor day!

So maybe black isn't the best idea. Can't be pullin' a fashion faux-pas.

But the black shoes are a great idea for this comming fall :)

you know, I can kinda see the advantage of having really bright colored shoes. Especially when climbing at night so you can see your feet. or maybe you could spray paint some kind of glow-in-the-dark spray paint. Look her feet are glowing!! How about a glow-in-the-dark sport top?

wow I had no idea that I should be so fashion orientated around the crag. I guess I am going to have to rethink my whole climbing wardrobe. I usually just go with the brown prana cords, white t-shirt, and my climbing shoes are a kind of lime green(hookers). ok white goes with anything so I will just not wear my cords, I will go with no paints. Ha I got it I will be the most fashionable person out there.

My girlfriend is also one of the fashion concerned crowd at the crag. I dunno if it is to look cool, whether she just likes the colour or if it makes her more comfortable but she has everything pink.

-Boreal Lazers (i think, black and hot pink stripes)
-Arkteryx harness (black and pink)
-Prana chalkbag, (white and pink)
- belay biner (metal, with pink twistgate)
-trango pyramid belay tube - pink

and is currently looking to buy her first rope.....she likes the pink one at MEC....size, brand, length, finish..irrelevant as long as it is pink...

but hey it gives me a nice new rope to climb on, pink or not.

Is everyone this fashion sensitive at the crag? I feel like I'm on the web site for a sears catalogue or something! :D
How about climbing , that way NOBODY will ever have to worry about fashion sense...lol! Not to mention the purest form of the art...

Some people are more concerned about looks then others... I have a friend who agonized over buying a harness because of the way it looked, was even willing to buy a more expensive harness with less functionality and harder to use because of the looks... It just matters to some people, no matter where they are...

Heh, and buying shoes with her would have been a fun experience, man that would have taken a long time!! :P

Its bad enough that climbing shoes look like ballet slippers. They also have to be purple too! I am thinking of adding lace and sequends on mine.
