I was wondering how the weather is in the Sangre's this time of year as far as climbing couloirs goes..Anyone?

Haven't been in there thisyear, but I've been all thru the Crestone area around this time in other years. The gullys above 11,500' or so will be full of snow -- very little if any ice. The top surface will be starting to go through it's annual freeze/thaw cycle so will be crusty for that good alpine start! Big thing all in the Rockies this time of year is sudden storms, which, though always possible, seem to be especially fierce and sudden in the spring. Gotta say, it's a lovely area -- take care! bw

this is not a normal year. i haven't been up there yet this year, but all approaches are totally snowed in from what i hear - be prepared a very long hike/snowshoe to get in. this should be a great season for couloirs, but assess avy danger carefully.
