OK, I'm not a climber (just the simple idea scares the hell out me). My brother however has just started and is loving it!! With Christmas & Birthday coming up, thought nice practical gift would be gear that he'll need!! Obviously want it to be a surprise so want to get stuff that he won't need to be there for but don't have a clue what that includes. Jut looking for a few ideas really, any help totally welcome!!

Well...you can always get him a gift certificate to a store that sells climbing gear. Does he have a harness? Chalkbag? Belay device http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=12823&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=488553&bmUID=1038572932219 ? If he plans on climbing outdoors and you care about his safety you can get him a climbing helmet such as this http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=18181&bmUID=1038573025993

He's climbed both indoors and outdoors!! I know his girlfriend bought him the belay device and the Petzl. I know he needs to be there for the likes of the harness and the shoes but what way does it work with helmets? I know he doesn't have any ropes. Can you recommend whats best to begin with?

Stuff he needs to fit into and be comfortable in won't do if you don't want him there. Kman was right where chalkbag and belay devices were concerned. You could get him a chalkbag + chalk, finger tape or even a voucher for the climbing gym. Still it isn't a bad idea to tell him you'll buy him a harness and ask him to go with you to try out a few and to choose one.

black diamond white gold all the way if he likes to boulder, a crashpad is good. they are upwards of 120-180 though. a few quickdraws would be nice if he does sport. oh wait, these are things im wanting no seriously, these are all pretty good, and/or a gift certificate so he can pick out what he thinks he needs.

why dont you get him a gift card for a store that sells climbing gear. that way he can get whatever he wants and it will still be from you.

That was a message I posted in November. My brother was starting to learn in full the delights of climbing. I was adament that I would support as much as possible but there was no way in hell I was even remotely interested in climbing. 6 months on and I can't get enought of it. It's just such a buzz. Your posts now become clear to me. New meaning is upon me. I've yet to try real rock, just using in door walls, and I haven't lead climbed yet. A little advice is needed. Big Bro says I'm going to have good technique. Problem is I find it hard to push myself to try something complicated as I have this terrible fear of falling, I know totally not going to as got a very good belayer but it just won't budge from my head. I have fallen as such so I know it isn't bad on top rope but arrrgghhh!! Any ideas how you get past it.

i agree with the last response. it probably sounds strange..but that's how it works. to an extent....you fall so many times you just get used to it. sometimes if i haven't lead in awhile, i get a little worked up about a potential fall. to solve this, i'll walk up to the first warm-up climb of the day, get to the top, pull some slack  , and take a calculated fall. then it's out of my system, and i'm good for the rest of the afternoon.

Just make sure if you do it in a lead fall, your pro is bomb proof and the fall zone is clear of things that will spin you. Wear a helmet. power on!

I entered this response under your post "addicted", but copied it here as well. Coaching a Junior climbing team, I see kids all the time who are holding themselves back because of a fear of falling. When I notice this, I usually prescribe a little "fall therapy". It works best in the controlled environs of a gym, but will also work outdoors. Climb up about 15-20 feet and with the rope taught, intentionally let go. Next, get back on and have your belayer let out a foot or two of slack, then let go again. After a few of these, gradually increase the amount of slack that the belayer lets out. I've had kids who were petrified of falling let go and catch 10+ feet of air by the end of one session. You should do this several times over several visits. Eventually your subconsious will realize that falling is no big deal, and will release your mind to focus on the moves, not on falling. I hope this helps; good luck!

i'm not a huge fan of falling either... but my partner made me jump off the wall in the gym anything from 2-15' fall... not such a problem anymore. try it, see if that helps.
