Publically slandering someone...
Can't Post

Recently, someone slandered me publically by posting that another person told him that my toprope set-up was unsafe and they downclimbed rather than having me lower them. This is utter B.S. The two people I have ever set up TR's for didn't say it.

So, either the poster is flat out making it up to try and make me look bad, or, the "source" was making it up and telling the poster a lie. In either case, shouldn't the poster have asked me about it and confirmed the story before going public with it? And, shouldn't he at least disclose his "source". Especially from a guy that calls me his "friend".

Your thoughts?

I would tolerate that not at all. I'd find out who the source of the problem is and make them explain to you personally what the problem is. Is it because you're a CHristian? If so, I'd consider taking legal action. IMHO

if you know you're right, then let it go, jody. life's to short to harbor bad feelings. let the other person deal carry the burden.

let it go.

I would differ on this one. I find that malicious people only become more bold if you let them. (But make absolutely certain you're right first.)

Basically, the poster didn't like what I was saying in a forum relating to climbing. He said I was not an expert climber and therefore didn't have the right to even discuss the issue. He then said this:

In reply to:
Not flame, but fact... I seem to remember when you and I hooked up at Yosemite last year, someone told me they got on a rope you set up a TR to, finished climb, was thankfull they didn't fall on you set up, topped out, untied and downclimbed since they thought it was unsafe.

Well, the two people there that I ever set up TR's for didn't say it so someone is feeding him a line of crap. And, what purpose did he have? "Not flame, but fact" Huh?

Not a good move on his part.

Yes, Jody, the world is out to get you, but don't you think it unnecessary to invent even more enemies?
Just a thought.

Okay, maybe I used the wrong description...How am I inventing more enemies? The guy made a post, quoting hearsay as fact, and won't divulge his supposed source. I was just curious as to what his motivation is or might be.

Just to clarify, are you saying he's creating more enemies by defending himself? From reading his post I'm not sure he's agreeing he made a mistake. Unless the implication is that by using the very similar word slander instead of libel, he is, by default, agreeing with the guy who made the statement? I think the flaw in logic is pretty clear; you'd be arguing by implication. It's a cosmetic argument; it doesn't hold water. Just to clarify your stance, with whom do you side in this argument? They guy who made the statement Jody is saying is false, or Jody?

Gosh, I'm confused. If someone posted something about you, that would be libel, not slander. I know, I know, English is hard, but keep plugging away, ya big lug.
So, if we are to agree that you made a mistake (heavens!), and you believe that someone libelled (that would "libeled" in American), this would require a defamatory statement regarding you personally, not a supposed top-rope set up.
So, you were criticised (American: criticized), not libelled/libeled. Yes, Jody, the world is out to get you, but don't you think it unnecessary to invent even more enemies?
Just a thought.

OMG. Best. Smackdown. Ever.

yeah!!!! don't let it f--k with ya jody. i don't think anyone here would judge you until they were personally at a crag with ya. i know i wouldn't. and peeps who make erroneous statements about climbers... well you've probably heard the old expression "bad news travels fast" so his actions will come back to affect his karma

Well, still no disclosure of this "source" and he has stopped answering my PM's. I just wonder why...1. The poster would make something up like that, and 2. Why, if someone else told him, that they would make it up. I asked both people I climbed with and they didn't say it.
