Ok, folks, new to the rockclimbing.com BB ... just checking it out, lots of fun stuff in here, lots of traffic, this is all good and sure beats working.... But here's my question: what is it about the "Bouldering" forum that makes it a nexus of vitriol? The flame setting on all topics seems to be on "high" and certainly is greater than other forums (ok, I haven't checked out the sport climbing forum yet).... Is it something about the bouldering culture (younger folks? folks climbing harder things requiring an "aggro" edge?)? Or could it have happened anywhere, it just happens to have happened here? Peace, Christopher PS. And why does the "u" in "bouldering" get left out so often?

Sorry, You'll probably have to define the word "vitriol" for the spraylords in the bouldering forum. Don't be surprised if someone there uses it to name their next project.....

I think it is because there is not that much to discuss about bouldering.

It's not a "flame setting"... Look at the ledgend at the bottom of the Forum page, as it refers to the # of replies.

Honestly, not... though I recant: not sure anymore that Bouldering is far worse than anything else. I was just reacting to the spewing back and forth over bouldering meccas, which should have been a fun thread, and to "tarpitting", something that I had never heard of. Then I read a few other threads that quickly degenerated and posted the question. Since then, I was reading other threads and other forums and I rescind my generalization. Also: by flame-setting I was speaking figuratively, and not refering to the little icons. Though, now that you mention it, it might be nice to have a set of icons that indicate the hostility level (as well as silliness level, hilariousness level and on and on ). But still: I tend to think that climbers of all stripes are generally of above-average friendliness .... that's certainly the vibe I typically get at the rocks, and over the years I have come to expect that. But put them behind a computer ....

I know what vitriol means! *coos* Climbers with a big vocabulary are sexy, don'tcha think? Hey, you wanna see unfettered vitriol, hostility with no boundaries, and the rantings of People With Serious Issues, go to the AID FORUM. You will not be disappointed...

In reply to: But here's my question: what is it about the "Bouldering" forum that makes it a nexus of vitriol? I would say the age and testostorine level of the participants. Not all flamers are adolescents and not all boluders are young, but they no doubt make up a higher percentage. Its unfortunate that so many forums deterioate into flame wars. If you are new here, my suggestion is just to ignore any hostile posts (don't feed the flames). There are a lot of interesting discussions, if you pick and choose.

hehe... sure does sound like a troll, and my prediction is a flame war in this topic very soon. :D My guess is it's the whole bouldering mindset. In general the kinds of people really into bouldering are the kinds who enjoy arguing online. It's not age or testosterone, it's just the steriotypical "boulderer" at work.

This never happens in the lead area. Coincidence? I think not.

How long have you been a piss-drinking rage-a-holic?

first off:
In reply to: In reply to: In reply to: Whine whine blah blah blah. Shut your pie-hole you ignorant twit! YOUR KIND REALLY MAKES ME PUKE! YOU VACUOUS, STUFFY-NOSED, MALODOROUS PERVERT!!! GO PS, anyone get the reference? The Holy Grail... towards the end. What do I win? no, it isn't in The Holy Grail. next, for real flaming and mindless dribble head over to boldering.com. or go to any post involving Passthepitonspete or Lox. Curt and bvb are also a bit notorious (NOTE: i am not saying i support or oppose any of the above!) basically, people are really different online. specifically, they tend to be more immature. nearly every climber i have met has been really mellow and just enthused about meeting another climber. no one really cared how strong i was, just how devoted i was. try sending private messages to a bunch of the bad flamers here - u will find almost all of them most friendly and helpful (even Lox seems like a great guy!). bouldering is just more "ghetto". maybe it is the fact that it is a bit "newer" and practiced my more younger people, perhaps because it is easier to do b/c it doesn't require as much equipment or technical knowledge. maybe it is the focus on doing the hardest possible moves above all else that gets the testosterone really high. i dunno. but when i think of bouldering, i think of rap music, beanies, and weed.

I beg to differ. From the time of the early early British boulderers through the exploits of the post WWII Bleausards in France, and continuing through the formative days of American bouldering as personified by Gill, Holloway, Williams and others--bouldering has been a rather genteel pastime. So naturally, when I think of bouldering I tend to think of Operatic tenors, silk hats and very old single malt scotch. Curt
