Just here to make an announcement, word is out that dairy farm may be closed, or at least part of it, The MOE is gonna take over the site and developed it into an adventure center for schools.

The entire story of the closing of Diary Farm goes like this:
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Parks and Water Bodies Plan proposes for development of the Dairy Farm area as an interim green and category B open space. This includes establishment of adventure camps and facilities to support an open air theatre in the quarry.
Is there anyway to stop our last natural climbing area from closing? :(

You might not have to find another place to climb! Inform the authorities and get the whole climbing community to support it. Maybe climbing can be included in the future uses of the area. In KL the government even supported the development of an area near Batu Caves. Are you sure the planners even know that the area is already used by climbers?

That's ridiculous.... :evil:
Any way of getting some sort of petition together - some way to show the authorities that this is an area which has a specific use?!
Perhaps if they are made aware that it is used on a regular basis by many people they may take it into account.
Worth a try....

Some Info
*** DAIRY FARM AND HINDHEDE QUARRIES ***
Following negotiations with the Singapore Mountaineering Federation, access to Hindhede Quarry may, once again, be allowed. Arrangements will be similar to those instituted in 1997 - 1999 when access was on the basis of an SMF-issued ID card which had to be shown and retained for the duration of the climbing session. Ingress and egress will be at specific times only and on weekends only. Stay tuned for confirmation of details.
Dairy Farm will be handed over to the National Parks Board by the Land
Office from July 2003. This means that, for the same liability and access
issues which affected Hindhede, climbing in DF from July will no longer be a public 'right' but a 'privilege'. Privileges will come with responsibility
and the SMF is working with the NParks to allow climbing to continue at DF
whilst implementing a mutually acceptable solution. In brief, the NParks
needs to be assured that people climbing at DF Quarry subscribe to the
minimum standards of rock ( not sport/wall climbing ) climbing techniques
and safety. Ultimately, over the space of one year, climbers wishing to
climb at DF may have to carry cards similar to that needed at Hindhede
Quarry indicating a minimum level eg. SMF Rock-climbing Level 1 course.
In the meantime , patrolling NParks rangers will adopt an ' educational' role rather than an enforcement role. Details such as access to visiting foreign climbers, experienced climber with no formal qualifications etc will be sorted out by the SMF.
In the past, independent climbers have questioned the role of the SMF or
even the reasons for joining a climbing club. At best, a club is a community of like-minded individuals. The recent events underscore that rock-climbing in Singapore is becoming a privilege , and with that, responsibilities and some small inconveniences. The SMF is striving to adopt a realistic stance to maximise climbing access without compromising the interests of other stakeholders. Climbers should consider supporting local clubs and a community of shared interest.

this topic is pretty critical: if the authorities stick to their plan to control entrance to the facilities they load a lot of responsability on their bureaucratic shoulders.
climbing is an activity that in the first place asks for responsability of the climber himself. you basically climb on your own risk. now, if there is entrance fee or entrance control this very easy rule becomes much more complicated. many gyms worldwide are facing the problem that - as more rules they implement as more liability come back to them.
most gym providers do not even realize that there ass could be sued off if really something awful happend. this only because they for example require a belay test.
a level one climbing course (mostly conducted at an indoor facility) is by no means an insurance or a proof that the climber really knows what he /she is doing. Accidents happen, especially to the so called experienced.
Please guys, check out discussions regarding this topic at the BMC and seek advise. These people went to scrutinize these probs and have a lot of experience, maybe can be of help in the negotiations with the authorities...
try everything to keep climbing a personal sport where the everyone has to take responsability. otherwise we generate a new breed of climbers who let the thinking be done by others
