ok, this probably belongs in another forum - but I've been here for what - 4 months? orig. trying to find out what is wrong with climbers! well, I like the people I have met in person, but there is a line... when guys get really serious about climbing, maybe the women too, but... there is a point at which nothing matters more than the trips, ... jobs, friends, eating/sleeping... at that point is it an addiction or the cure? just a rambling whining note, but I wonder if maybe there is a "type" of person who gets too "into" the whole thing.

Heck it must be the darkside. I just had to buy a headlamp to climb in the dark.

One does not climb to gain enlightenment but rather one climbs because they are enlightened. Why are some people obsessed with their jobs, their lawn, porcelin figurines, or classic muscle cars?

Addiction, dependency, or whatever.....I've been sucked into the vortex. I've only been climbing a little over a year now, but I've climbed every weekend since I started, not to mention all the times during the week as well. Furthermore, everything I used to really enjoy......wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding.......doesn't exist in my life anymore.....JUST CLIMBING!! I choose not to fight it, though.......why would I? It's become a passion. I think everyone should have a passion.

I haven't watched TV in a month. I'm having the cable turned off. the newspapers are stacking up - I just don't care. But it is interfering with my sleep now. Last weekend I couldn't sleep - I was so excited the night before a climb. I slept with my climbing shoes. I think I need help...

Its an addiction for sure. I can't get enough. Other aspects in my life have suffered like relationships and my job to some extent but it's worth it. I went for a hike this AM and biked at lunch. Why? Cardio is good for climbing. I had an alpine epic last weekend. What have I been thinking about ever sice? My next alpine route. I climbed in Boulder Canyon last night until last light. What was I thinking on the way home? I was wishing for more light. It's Friday night and what am I gonna be doing? Taking the kids to the park so they can play while I boulder and getting stuff done so I can be out the door at 7:30 Am to hit Clear Creek Canyon. In my office, I'm surrounded by drawings, contracts and specifications and the following books are strewn about: Rock Climbing Utah, Rock Climbing Colorado, Climb On, Performance Rock Climbing and the Boulder Canyon Guidebook. Even when I get spanked relentlessly, I want MORE!!! It's an automatic response for me to want more. I can't control it. It's an addiction and it's my passion.

Wigglestick, I like it. When I really get into the swing of climbing (ie got myself a regular partner and available rock), I get seriously addicted. Can't sit around one day. Last year I had a weekend free due to rainout and had no idea what to do with my 48 hours.

"Other aspects in my life have suffered like relationships" then do you have to decide if relationships are important? could you be with someone who didn't climb or didn't "let" you climb? I am really searching for thoughtful answers.

In reply to: I read absolutely nothing but guidebooks...over and over and over. Do you open your guidebooks looking for beta on a specific route and find yourself looking at about 5 other climbs before you even make it to the one you originally intended to look at?
