Please tell me girls. Womens magazines - do you not feel patronized by them? If I was a girl, I think I would judging by the ones I have read. I mean all they seem to go on about is celebs, fashion, and problems. What (if you do) do you find interesting in them?

I think most climbing women don't go for those magazines. Those magazines are aimed at 'normal' girls.

I just bought one over lunch. Ms. Never lets me down. The others...I just flip to the fashion do's/don'ts on the back page or ask my bf the embarassing sex questions when we're in line at the grocery store. Every now and then I get a guilty pleasure from looking at the beautiful people and beautiful things when I'm on the eliptical runner at the gym. The articles are written for oversexed 3rd graders though, so I usually just look at the pix which is all I can do whilst working out anyway.

atg, No quizzes?! So should we also ignore the articles like 'The top ten most erotic ways to drive your man crazy in bed'. Sheesh, Cosmo should be studied in eighth grade health class. Teasing, of course (although I did used to read those high quality mags in my teens... :roll: ). -k.

I admit - I love my subscription to Glamour - it's a guilty pleasure. Favorites are the makeovers and there are at least one or two "serious" articles in there. I'll read just about anything. Right now I'm on the last chapter of the latest Harry Potter book. I wish the train was delayed this morning :?

Sroehlk, I'm with you...I'll read whatever I can get my grubby hands on. I just finished the Harry Potter book! You'll love it! The mags are made for pure entertainment, that's how I view them anyway. Take them for what they are, don't make them you're bible and you'll be fine!

well i have to admit i learned some pretty interesting things reading cosmo :) :oops: i was never really into reading the chicky magazines when i was a teenager. i actually found that after flipping through a "seventeen" or "ym" magazine i would be in front of the mirror examining my body flaws and making a mental note not to eat. seeing how it affected me, i avoided girly magazines altogether. now i read climbing, and rock & ice

i like jane. while the level of sarcasm and the quality of humor exceeds that of cosmo, i still read that from time to time. yet i'm a liberal, feminist who majored in women's studies. i was also an english lit major who occasionally reads james patterson and nicholas sparks. are they decidedly unrealistic? of course. do they provide a random distraction? yep. do i examine by body flaws or expect to be swept off my feet by a handsome, yet troubled fireman? nah. jen

I used to read rag mags all the time from all the countries and now I rarely even pick one up. I currently subscribe to rock & ice, climbing, Adventure, dwell and the Atlantic Monthly. Ten years ago that list was really different! The fashion mags don't really change, always the same surveys, articles, layouts, etc. I do remember that Marie Claire used to always have one very good article in each issue. There was one about female circumcision that still makes me cringe when I think of it. The main goal of fashion mags is to sell us stuff we really don't need. Can you imagine a spread in rock & ice with some hot climbing guy/girl decked out in climbing duds and the shiniest hottest gear ever leaning seductively against a rock>>>flip to the next page>>>same person scrabbling across the talus looking wistfully into the sky as he sports a new high tech arcteryx outfit while camelots aliens and nuts dangle from his harness. I agree with maculated, most of the climbing women I know don't go for the fashion mags - those are for the "normal" girls and once you get into climbing there just is no more being normal.

In reply to: The main goal of fashion mags is to sell us stuff we really don't need.. That's pretty much the goal of any mag that generates revenue mainly through avertising.

Why imagine it when Climbing and R&I are full of this sort of thing. Advertising (or lack thereof) is the main reason why Ms. is my favorite women's mag and Alpinist is my favorite climbing mag. The content of the articles etc. really improves radically with out the advertising pressure. Obsevation: I'm turning 30 next month, and have decided that I'm finally ina place where I'm pretty comfortable with my appearance and can easily ignore my flaws. I don't really pay much attention to fashion or do my hair or worry about my weight, etc. anymore, although I used to. I worry much more about poor climbing performance, and probably consequently spend a lot more money trying to "improve myself" in that realm. I think that at least some degree of my climbing insecurity that leads to my climbing consumerism is influenced by the amount of attention that I pay to the climbing media. Do you gals that read the mags feel affected too? Melissa

quote="maculated"]I think most climbing women don't go for those magazines. Those magazines are aimed at 'normal' girls. Those mags are positivly dangerous in the wrong hands. I bet they have dropped more than one relationship in the poop over the years with those helpful articles suggesting "10 easy ways to see if your man is:cheating on you/gay/a paedophile/cross dressing/faking his erection". Etc. A few pages after the relationship killing article, there is usually several glossy pages of fashion depicting a gaggle of models freezing their skinny butts off on a beach in the middle of winter displaying some rather average looking clothes designed by some some fat,balding 50 year old Italian guy, and text that suggests you consider throwing your entire wardrobe out because these are the latest colours and fashions and you are going to look pretty tragic if you don't buy them. Somewhere near the back is this months "Miracle Diet" where you need do no exercise as long as you eat vast amounts of bread/ice cream/prunes/donuts or mutton chops,depending on the fad. alternativly, you may be required to sweat/row/step/steam/cardio glide or aqua jog for "Just 5 minutes a day" to lose 30kg in just 14 days! (These fad diets and workouts only ever take 14 days. That gives you two weeks to chub up again in time for the next one) And finally, getting to the real point of these magazines, there are 65 pages of glossy ads. Ads for cars you will never own, perfume you can't afford, clothes you can't wear and for womans personal products that are so good that you could do the Tour of France on a heavy month and probably win. If this is the preferred reading fare for normal girls, give me an r&I reading climbing gal any day.

though I recently posted with critique on womens' fashion ads, I still skim some of the womens' mags. Elle, Glamour (used to have gift subsc.), Ms., Redbook (for food along w/ other married womens' mags for food), SELF. I don't want to buy into the whole, "you ought to look like a model clone" type of message but I like the relationship articles, to see what are fashion/home design trends (am into art/design and trends spark ideas). the sex tip articles are overdone (and not too creative) but can be interesting. I like reading mens' mags too. Esquire (some of the best writing) and askmen.com (the Player's advice is sometimes funny, sometimes off-putting, and sometimes iluminating).

[quote="kcrag"]atg,

Instead of relying on some deadline-squeezed editor's imagination of what a number of men may or may not like, why not just ASK the specific one you're with? And get it straight from the source, so to speak.
