I heard breifly on the radio this morning that someone died on Mt. Lorette in Kananaskis. They said he was alone and wearing no equipment. Anyone know anything more? There was nothing on the newspaper websites this morning.

Two possibilities here: they were updating a fatality from February, or someone else has now died trying to do it solo. Alpine Accidents in Canada gives this account of the Feb. 17 fatality: A Calgary man who set out to climb a popular Kananaskis peak was found dead Tuesday. The unidentified man had planned to make a solo climb of Mount Lorette on Monday. His family became concerned when he did not return to the city later that evening as scheduled. Kananaskis RCMP and public safety workers launched a helicopter search for the missing man Tuesday. His body was discovered around 9 a.m., about 120 metres from the summit of Mount Lorette. The mountain is located in the Kananaskis Valley, about five kilometres north of the Nakiska ski hill. RCMP are not releasing the name of the man pending notification of next of kin. Mounties continue to investigate the incident. UPDATE: A 40-storey drop killed a Calgary man who was climbing a Kananaskis mountain, an investigation revealed. "We believe he fell about 400 feet, measuring from where we found footprints," said George Field, public safety specialist for K-Country and a member of the search party that discovered the young man's body Tuesday. A.S., age 18, left his Calgary home about 0700 hrs Monday, said Kananaskis RCMP Cpl. Keith Blake. "He told his family he was going to climb Mt. Lorette and would be back that same night," he said. When concerned family members hadn't heard from A.S. by midnight, they called the Mounties. "His father came out and together we located A.S.'s truck about 2:30 a.m.," Blake said. Too dark to continue the search, Blake then contacted K-Country mountain specialists to form a search party. At first light Tuesday, A.S.'s body was spotted on the southeast ridge of Mt. Lorette by a search team in a RCMP helicopter. "The medical examiner said he died of multiple injuries from a suspected fall," Blake said. A.S. was alone at the time of his fall, Blake said. Field said the area is not usually a tough climb, but no one should attempt any such endeavour alone. "Soloing is definitely raising the danger factor," he said. The area where A.S. was found is a popular place for climbers and there hasn't been a fatality in the 19 years Field has worked in the area. "But in the winter with snow and stuff and the loose rock, you're taking a chance," Field said.

An unidentified 23 year old man from Calgary died on Mt. Lorette on Tuesday. He was reported missing yesterday and found. Rescuers figure he fell about 70 meters. Go to the Calgary Herald website and peck around. I found the story there.

Calgary Herald Thursday, July 17, 2003 ADVERTISEMENT A Calgary man has died during a solo climb of a mountain in Kananaskis Country. Rescue officials estimate the 23-year-old fell about 70 metres to his death while climbing Mount Lorette, a 2,469-metre peak about 60 kilometres west of Calgary. A family member reported the man missing Wednesday after he didn't return home the previous day. His name has not been released. Conservation officers on the ground and a helicopter searched the area and found the man dead at the bottom of a slope of loose rock. It's believed he lost his grip and fell. The man is the second Calgarian to die during a solo climb of Mount Lorette this year. Alex Sullivan, 18, died in February after falling from near the summit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the story from the hearld.

Condolences... When more information comes to light it would be much appreciated if it could be posted here. Perhaps the two young men who have died this year on Lorette can serve as a warning that, though relatively easy, this mountain should not be underestimated, as it often seems to be. Again, condolences... Brad.
