Yeah, Pete's Pile. I am looking for a listing of the routes at Pete's Pile near Hood River. The location is listed in Portland Rock Climbs but no map of whats what.

I talked to Pete seveal years ago, and he said that they were going to put together a guide book, but I haven't seen hide, nor hair of him since. I think others have taken to putting up new routes and he has disappeared. spooky......

This is what I know. If you are sitting looking up at the wall from the wooden belay bench you will see 3 anchors. The far left crack is a 5.8 the next one over to the right is a 5.9, and the next to the right is a 10A. That is all I know except that I heard they are not going to produce a map because they want to keep it remote feeling.

Anybody want to volunteer? Do you know any of the route names? If so send them on to me. It is a great area.

I was just there. From the bench i'd say 5.8, 5.9, 5.8. And far right, second in (with the small overhang) I'd call 10a. It needs a 60m rope to rap. Everything else looked dirty/overgrown.

Hi Evan: I might have missed something here. Can't you just go there and climb something? You posted this request almost a year ago. No one really put the answer out there. Have you been out there yet? If you have gone there, how did it go for you? Isn't it just OK to go climb and not worry about names and ratings? Or do you want to put together a "guidebook". As an asside, if you are putting together a "guidebook", I'm sure everybody you ask who has climbed there will tell you please not to do this, that leaving it for everyone to discover on their own is prefered. Don't you think there may be a reason that there is a dearth of info and nobody discusses it? Just curious and please don't think I'm slamming you here, but think it over. Beacon opens next month too if you're looking for the established routes/known quality kind of thing.

Petes Pile is exactly that: a pile. It is not worthy of a guidebook. I put a route up there( the 5.8 to the right of the bench) years ago and called it "smell my finger" because that place stinks. Back then there were not a lot of routes there. If you like spending all day scrubing moss off the rock and breathing ash that you have to scrape out of the cracks then you'll like the climbing. Have fun. Peace, Larry

Hellloooooo Larry: "Smell my finger"?? DUUUUDDDDEEEEE Please, you're killin' me here! (I think it got upgraded to 5.9 now by the committe to grade routes people) I hear a similar refrain as yours from everybody though: that the place sucks, what with the garbage, crowds full of assholes, few routes, car break ins, poor pro and choss rock, ...hmmmm maybe they're talking about Da Butte though. side note for you: Got my Mountain Tools catalog in the mail the other day and my kid was fawning over your highline pic in there. I said...yeah, I know that guy, climbed with him last year, he's a good guy. So I think I got elevated in my kids eyes now: - thank you. Make any money on it? If so, you think they'd spring for the wide ass pic of me at Petes I linked previously? Maybe I can get paid by the inch and make some real money.

If you are not interested then dont bother replying. Yeah I have climbed there. It is a alternative if you are out that way anyway. It would take about 10 minutes to draw up the routes and post them somewhere. I am not a big fan of beacon either. The rock sucks. You are probablly right...might as well go somewhere worth climbing at.

Normally a person would say "thank you" at that point, not "If you are not interested then don't bother replying. " He's interested, as am I, thats why we replyed. Obviously he made a mistake in giving the info up, but I won't hold it against him or his stinky finger and I hope you do not either. Maybe its a misinterpretation or I misread it, to me, it sounded like you are saying "piss-off and die chuffer" or something like that. Of couse I'm assuming you were directing that to him. Not a big Beacon fan? PLEEEAASSEE. Don't like Beacon? Hmmmm. Wow. Well, I guess you won't be showing up there insulting the locals (Like Larry used to be till he moved to Moab) anyway, so maybe that's a good thing. Clean, beautiful, soaring 200-300 foot cracks on solid rock aren't everyones cup of tea. So........... still curious, when does the guidebook for Pete's come out then?

Looks like ici changed his mind about doing the guidebook for petes pile as I see he edited all that stuff about it out of his first post. Thanks, it really wasn't needed anyway. Now I'm left wondering what his post really said.
