Backcountry travel ban imposed
WebPosted Aug 28 2003 02:53 PM PDT
VICTORIA - Heading into the long weekend, the provincial government has closed all forested public land in southern B.C. to the public because of the fire danger.
The government has issued a travel advisory last week, but that has now been upgraded to a full ban.

Forests Minister Mike de Jong says it's just too risky to allow people into backcountry areas.
The restriction order covers Crown land and Forest Service roads in the southern third of the province
It includes the area from Clearwater south to the U.S. border – and from southern Vancouver Island east to the Alberta border.
Anyone caught violating the ban could be fined up to $10,000 and sent to jail for six months.
