Anybody know who the climber was that fell from the Trapps while looking for the descent in the dark a couple of weeks ago?
I haven't heard anything in the papers, but I know it happened...

I posted a similar thread on gunks.com.

The latest (and only) news concerning this is the following:

"I don't know about the fatality. A woman did rappel off the ends of her rope, falling perhaps ten feet. She had some injuries, I don't think too severe.

The stranded woman is one of those bizarre tales that only seem to happen in the Gunks.

A man and woman started up the Easy V at about 1:30 PM on Saturday. The woman was reported to be very inexperienced. I'm not sure about the man, but he was taking her up. Somehow this team managed to end up with her on the GT ledge and the man at the top at 9PM with the rope between them jammed. The guy shouts down that he is going to the car for a light. He then wanders around the top in the dark until he becomes concerned he might blunder over the edge, so he sits down to wait for morning. Cut back to the girl. She spends the night on the GT ledge. No word from the guy. Morning comes, and still no word from the guy. She shouts down to a passing party and they climb up and get her down. She goes back to their car and finds the light and no sign that the guy ever made it back. Rangers are notified. Concern rises that the guy fell over the edge in the dark. The cliff top and cliff bottom are traversed multiple times with no sign of the guy. He is eventually found back from the edge near one of the vernal pools not far from the Uberfall. He's been sitting there not only all night, but most of the next day, since he is found at 4 PM on Sunday. He complains that his feet hurt from his climbing shoes and he didn't want to walk. The rangers suggest he take his shoes off and walk him down the Uberfall in about 10 minutes.

You can't make this stuff up. "

Hope this clears up the rumors...

Welcome to the Gunks! I swear that place just draws in the idiots. I have no sympathy for that man, he is a TOOL. I feel bad for the girl he left stranded on the GT ledge. If I were her, boy would I lay into him.

To bad, the Gunks is a GREAT place, but filled with city folk who take one belay class at the gym, go buy a rack, and try to teach the world how to climb when they really have no idea.

If they were married I am sure that they aren't now! Wow, cannot imagine doing that to anyone, let alone not communicating what you were doing. Crazy.

Not an Urban Legend.

I was there at the time and was involved peripherally in the search.

The young man may have either been under the effect of some mood altering chemistry, or may have been suffering from some type of fatigue/shock. I'm not privy to medical histories, but the story, in the larger sense (and with some minor details incorrectly reported) is true.

He was actually spotted earlier than 4 pm on Sunday. In the late morning, people climbing in the Near Trapps reported seeing a person frantically waving a flag/shirt at the top of a small escarpment on the Southern end of the Trappsm (100 meters above and back from the cliff line near the Frog's Head wall).

When people saw him and spoke to him while he was being tranported in the Ranger truck, he seemed embarassed, and fully aware that he had been acting out of character.

The story is not an urban legend. The account posted here and copied from gunks.com is mine, as told to me by one of the rangers who found the guy. I left out the part about how he was spotted, but any inaccuracies would have to be those of one of the actual responders.

The people who saw him waving apparently did not have the impression that he was in any great distress. When one of the rangers who was searching the top of the cliff came by, they told him about the guy, and that's how he was found. The four o'clock figure is either the time the rangers reached him or the time they had him down at the Uberfall.

4 pm was about the time the whole thing came to some type of conclusion, I believe. Or at least that's the time the rumour winds swept past the front porch of the Mountain Deli.....

I think he was "apprehended?" / rescued? @ 2/3 pm and like all good Quasi law enforcement agencies, the Preserve Rangers sat him on display in a vehicle for a little while.

The only "inaccuracies" that I may have been referencing is that the guy was just a plain "noob" wearing shoes that may have been too tight.

Could have been a blood sugar thing? or any number of actual physocologic conditions that caused his severe disorientaion and poor decision making.

I mean he did find the cliff to begin with, right?
