I just bought a 74 VW bus and I was wondering if anyone had any info on what has gone wrong with these vans. I'm planning a trip to Alaska and I want to gather every precaution possible. If anybody knows anything about the old V-dubs I'd also like to know what can be done to make them run more efficiently and what spare parts I might want to carry along. Well "I've gotta get on the road again."

The best thing you can buy is........a toolbox!!!!!!!! I loved my '71 VW bug but I have to tell you unless you love working on cars and have a tremendous amount of mechanical knowledge these things can be nightmares! Sorry. woodsE

I have a '72 VW Van. I hate it/I love it. I've had it for years and as woodse said if you don't like mechanical work get rid of it. My main statement is ITS A BRICK WITH A MOTORCYCLE ENGINE. Don't try to drive it like a Ferrari. If it doesn't have hydraulic lifters in it you may want to have a kit put in as this will save constant manual adjustments. and get a manual and a toolkit. Oh yes and get as extra propane heater or something as you will probably need it in Alaska.

Saw this brilliant film, last week. Documentary! The Journey http://www.thejourneyfilm.com/journeyfilm/intro.htm Check it out...anyone and everyone who is searching for a reason... wanting to know what the meaning of life is.... or if looking for the bum and climb lifestyle The trailer doesn't do the film justice... but, still the VW van...thought of this thread! If ever this film is playing near you... see it. You'll know why, I reccomend it HIGHLY! T
