anyone have any reccomendations on a tent brand?
kelty seems to be the ghetto of all tents, but more in my price range (maybe that says something).. anyone had any problems with these?
REI has a few good deals on some MOSS stuff too, anyone?

Wait, ghetto in a good way or bad? Kelty makes some damn fine tents. I know a few people with Kelty tents and they love them. I managed to grab a North Face tent at 60% off or something, but then again I'm a master at not paying full price for anything

now that i look at them the kelty's dont seem so bad.. i meant ghetto in that they are the cheapest of the available tents.
basicly it goes like this
i need to get a tent before hueco this weekend, and dont have a ton of money to spend on it (thats less money out of the future road trip fund)

Dude, let me know where you're shopping, all the Kelty's I've seen have been the more expensive of the bunch
hrm, I may possibly have been confusing Kelty with Sierra Designs.

I just bought a Kelty JetStream II and it's the best tent I've ever used. I put the thing up in about 3 min. (the first time I ever touched it). It's a little heavy (bout' 7 pounds soft top, 9 pounds hard top) but it's a 2-4 season tent. Sounds odd, but the thing is a bombshelter with the hardtop up. I got it for $200. Go to www.sierratradingpost.com and at least see what they have there (the cheapest place I found on the net). Good luck and have fun on the overnight.

thanks, but turns out i cant go to hueco, and am therefore waiting for a tent till later. (ive got my eye on a really nice MOSS that is round 250 (normally like 400))
keltys are really cheap on rei.com and rei-outlet.com . hell, they have kelty tao2s for like 110 bux on the outlet.
anyway, thanks again, and i will check out that website

If you can spot them, Doite tents are very good, they're tough and cheap being made in chile, they also have some rather interesting designs.

I LOVE my Kelty. It has been all over the country with me, and I got no complaints, except the original stahes were made outta mush- buy a Kelty, then buy some steel stakes. The weight is worth it for me.

Keltys are not that Ghetto. I used to have one and was pretty satisfied. However, I would go with Eureka! tents if you are going for that price range. They are overall a little lighter weight.

... tents??? sorry dude i have no advice... i like to sleep under the stars, and if its rains then i just pull a tarp around me and i usually get the same sleep... NONE! i never sleep well when camping/backpacking. unless i am with my wussy set of friends, then we drive to the place, and they camp right there... so i drop my tail gate in my 4Runner, open up my crashpad and sleep with my head out the back... if it starts to rain, hop on in and close the tailgate! thats my advice...

I have a kelty vortex, it is a really solid 3 season tent, and even works in 4 season conditions. When you decide to buy I would definitely look at the backpacker gear guide, I have used this for buying all of my camping stuff, those dudes know what they are talking about.

Kelty tents are good solidly made tents. The reason why they are more reasonably priced than other brands of the same quality is because Kelty and Sierra Designs are the same company. They are used to get people interested in a Kelty for price and then upgrade to a Sierra Designs, or buy a SD right off the bat for a little more money.
I would personally save some cash since you arent going to hueco this weekend and buy a Marmot Screech or Hoot (3person screech). Gotta love that Marmot gear.

Here is all ya need to know
about tents.
I have been living in the pacific northwest
for 14 years.
This is an area of the country that really
proves the worth of your tent.
On many backpacking and mountaineering
trips I've never had a problem with EUREKA!
tents. I currantly own 2, a solitare and
a tetragon.
Both are great tents, that have stood up
to the northwest weather, and best of all...
they dont cost an arm and a leg!
Dont believe in the myth that you have to
spend $400 bucks, to have a good tent.
(unless, yer planning on a high altitude, or
artic trip).
Just get yourself a EUREKA! 3 season tent.
The important thing to remember is to have
a good sleeping bag rated to at least 5 degrees or better yet lower, bomber sleeping
pad, and dont forget to use the seam sealer.
You do all that, and you'll be able to use
your EUREKA! 3 season tent in all 4 seasons
comfortably. I have.

You didn't say how big or how many season tent your looking for. I have an REI half dome plus 2, it's a great tent for two people. REI in my opinion makes good stuff at a good price.

Well, we never really found out what type of conditions you'll be using this tent in....or how many sleepers you'll have. I'll assume 2 person tents are what you're after.
But here's my not so humble advice: If you're just car camping, just about anything will do. Get a used Eureka and seam seal the hell outta it.
If you're going to sleep in extremely cold weather and hi winds, get a wild country or North face mountain tent. Or find a not so used Sierra designs Tyros expedition. These tents (and these tents alone) have shown themselves worth their salt in the Alaska range in my experience. All other tents I've used or seen used up there have been shredded. especially the classic NF VE25. what a waste of moohlah.
If you're doing something in between these extremes, look around for bargains on 3 season tents from North face, sierra designs, kelty, whoever. Most people don't need a really bombproof, 500$ tent. and most people who do have expensive tents wouldn't know how to put one up in a howling gale, anyway.

I have owned The north face, kelty, eureka ect... in the past. what I have found is Eureka makes the best out of any of them and they are not that expensive.

yes eureka makes good tents, ill agree there. i favor the peak1 tents. at some coleman outlets you can find some clearance tents for dirt cheap. but they recently changed their name to 'exponent'. the product stayed the same just different name, prices, and colors. i dont remember the name of my tent but its a little 1-2 person, 3 season tent, and its only like 4-5 pounds if that. it packs up to about 12-14 inches long and about a 4 inch diameter roll. very small and light. i love it.
oh yeah, i forgot to mention that i only paid $69.00 brand new for it. they had a whole stack of them for that price.
