I am just starting to get into aid climbing, and I am looking at buying my first set of etriers. I have been told that the ladder style ones have a much more natural feel to them, and are overall easier to use and more comfortable than the ones with opposing steps. So I have narrowed my decision down between the metolious 8 step ladder entrier and the lates speed wall ladder. Can anyone recommend one over the other, or even one that I have not listed? Any advice would be appreciated.

Get the Yates, they are very well made and work awesome. The nice thing is that with ladders you just throw your feet in them. No need to look half the time. I still couldn't beleive how much better they work. The yates also strech a lot less than other aiders makeing testing more effective.

Likewise... The Yates are excellent. Really comfortable and plenty of room in each step. Nice colours too!

Word! Yates Ladders all the way. The Metolius looped aiders and the BD Alpine aiders get all tangled up and twisted and can slow you down when you're trying to move fast. As said before, it's difficult to just stick your feet in and go. Metolius also makes a 5 - step ladder aider. My partner used them, I didn't so I don't really know how they compare.

Go with YATES LADDERS !!! My Big Wall partner "Flying" Ben Banks uses them and they work GREAT. I use Russian Aiders :)

I use a 4 aider system. Two of the Metolius 8-step ladders, and two of the Yates Big wall ladders. I can't wait until the Metolius ladders wear out and I can justify buying another pair of the Yates. And just to clarify, if you're going with a two aider system you might want to get the Yates BW ladders instead of the Speed ladders. If you're an experienced aid climber looking to cut down on weight and bulk, then the Speed ladders would be great, but if you're kind of new to aiding you're going to be spending some time standing in those things. The BW ladders have a wider step and are going to be more comfortable.
In general, I can't say enough glowing things about Yates products. All of 'em. Great stuff manufactured by a guy who has logged a lot of time in the ladders. He knows what works. The colors are a little funky, though. Figures Tom would dig 'em. Crazy limey. :lol:

Since yates makes the big wall ladders in both a 6 and a 7 step verion, which size would be the best all-around on?

umm -- i think i have th 6-step kind .. worked fine ..
i'm 5'8" .. and if i place a piece as far as i can reach, then the bottom steps are conveniently just higher than my current position ..
.. if you're significantly taller then the 7 step might be more convenient?
.. is there an advantage to having 6 and 7 step aiders in a set?
