are you a mountaineer who rockclimbs or a rockclimber that climbs mountains? Looking back over my climbing experience I realised that although I started as a pure mountaineer, most of my time has been spent rockclimbing(albeit climbing occasional technical mountaineering routes)

I'd say a little of both! Just gimmie a long approach (ewww, I know), a dozen pitches of 5.10 :P and some 3rd or 4th class to a main summit and I be havin a good day! know what I mean!

Rockclimber who looks forward to adding more mountaineering skills. One of my goals for winter...more mountains.

They are all rocks, some are just bigger and looser than others.

hmmm.... I have to say both. I find mountaineering to be very different than pure climbing. With mountaineering, the route + the weather + the approach + all those unforseen variables that complicate the day. I prefer technical sections of mountains that are far below my abilities, just because of all the other funk that can go on and kill you.

The first 14 years of my climbing life I was a mountaineer, loved glaciers and snow, still do. Then 6 years ago I took up rock climbing with the purpose of acquiring skills to get me to more summits. In the last 2 years I've taken more road trips for rock or ice climbing than for mountaineering. I still have more mountaineering goals that I'm working on than rock climbing goals, but it seems it's taking me longer to achieve them now that I'm distracted by the vertical.

I like to pretend that I'm a mountaineer, but as I live in Ohio and have climbed a mountain...I think I'd honestly have to say rock climber. Personally, I just like to be on top of a pile of rocks. The harder it is to get there and the bigger the pile, the better.

Yup, I don't boulder much anymore. Bones have gotten too brittle and tendons too inflamed. Just a has-been wannabe when it comes to bouldering. Still a climber, though, although not a "REAL [TM] Climber".

I'm with ya......mountaineer who took up rock climbing because the more serious I got about mountaineering, the more rock climbing I needed to do. Still consider myself a mountaineer rather than a rock climber, but I've become pretty good at the rock climbing thing....must be all that training in plastics and crampons......get me in some climbing shoes and I am FREE.....

Well, I have never done Mountaineering if you can believe it. I started climbing 2 years ago, mostly sport, but I am moving on in to trad which is great! I am gonna try Ice this winter, and maybe big walls next year (I live 30 minutes from Zion National Park. :) :) :) ) Also! I never hear much about Canyoneering, I know its nothing like mountaineering, but the harder stuff does require some skills you learn in climbing (IE: Rappels, Bat Hooking, Setting up anchors just to name a few.) How many of you guys Canyoneer? I know I do.

Neither. A hiker that uses mountaineering skills to get to interesting places. Did someone post that 3-4 hours is an OK approach? 3-4 days is good and 3-4 weeks is even better! Maybe get up a peak or two on the way. (bumbling up easy ice and rock routes is damn fine fun too) And also a canyoner. mmmm....canyons.
