I've seen a few break  but the stunt is invariably preceded by a loud "Oh, I've done this a million times!" Apparently #1,000,000 means it's going to break, all the stupid things one does to a nalgene before time one million are fine.

My buddy ran over it wit a car DIDN'T brake, so he got out an axe. After a few blows it broke. He brought it into MEC and they gave him a new one.

I saw a nalgene snap open like like an egg once.

Of course my smart friend dropped it full of water off a 240 foot cliff!!!

It was funny. He actually tried to zip-line it down the 240' rappel, it hit a rock on the way down. REI replaced the bottle for free.

I like the Nalgene, I use them all the time.

Oh yea, another friend of mine, Sam, broke the top off his narrow mouth. It fell like 15 feet, and it was full of water. And again, it was replaced for free, well, he worked for a local shop.
I still a narrow mouths.

Why do people use nalgene bottles?
For $1 I get a lighter bottle already filled with spring water at any conveniece store. And I can reuse it!
And I think either is about as tough as the other.

This has to be the funniest thread I've read in weeks.

I haven't really put my nalgene under much abuse. I want it to live a long and happy life.

I also like neeshman have conducted many different Nalgene strenght tests. The only difference is that all most all of the tests that he talked about were actually conducted mainly by me. But who cares anyways. They were all pretty cool. So out of the three Nalgene's (I think that is what the casualty count is up to) that I have broken I have never broken a lid. It seems that at least from my experiments that it is that bottom of the bottle that is it's weak spot. The closest that I have come to breaking a lid is when the loop attaching the lid to the bottle came off but the lid still worked fine.

One other thing. Up to this point all of the Strenght tests have been conducted with the standard 1 liter wide mouth bottles, except for the Pine Creek Overlook. I think in the near future I can see my self conducting strenght tests with both the narrow and wide mouth versions of the 1/2 liter bottles.

Well Best of luck to all of you conducting your own strength tests and may you Nalgene take many more falls then you do.

One other thing really quick. With the next Nalgene Strenght Test currently in the planning stages, I will try to remember to bring my camera along so that I can have some good documentation of the tests and what if anything breaks that bottle.

Wish my Nalgene's luck in their next Strenght Test.

because although this post was about nalgenes breaking, they are basically indestructible, and the majority of people who own one will tell u so

plus who wants a piece of shi t flimsy container, when u can have a colorful one thats all-around great

I just remembered about a strength test that Neeshman conducted but didn't report. Now this wasn't your normal strength test by any means. But he took a bottle and with a borrowed ice axe began to swing away at it. I'll just leave it at that and let him narrate the rest of the story because he is far better at it then I am.

From hy experience in the airline industry, I suspect the nalgene crushed while inside the pack was a victim of the Waterford 7500, a hydraulic press capable of delivering a point load in excess of seven thousand, five hundred kilotons of pressure, stock in all baggage handling rooms worldwide. You all bitch when your bags aren't there, and then when we do find a tiny niche to put them on the plane, you want to bitch about the results.

Tourons.

The externally carried nalgene could have succombed to any number of causal incidents, but was most likely between the cargo truck and the aircraft during its routine maintenence cycle and was used to back up one of the pylon jacks while we duct taped the turbofan securely in place on the wing. Same deal, basically, except in this case you're crying because the engine *didn't* fall off.

Breaking them is easy. Give them to Marines. We used them becuase hey were bigger than our canteens and supposedly indestructible. My A$$ they're indestructible.

Twice I've purposely tried to break them. First time I filled it with dry ice then flung it off the 3rd floor of my barracks after a few mintues. Bam. pieces. Second time was with a "canteen bomb". You take the chemical heater from an MRE and drop it into a bottle (poweraid bottles work best) with an inch or two of water in the bottom. Throw it FAST so as not to blow yourself up. That time the cap came off, but took the neck with it. the rest of the bottle stayed mostly intact.

I've run mine into the ground, but have yet to break one. (Although it does piss me off when the white lettering/measurements get rubbed off...)

Seriously, someone please figure out the Kn rating on them. I would pay for a Nalgene with a Kn Rating on the side.

They seem to do immensely well when they are dropped from cars or bikes...its the height and sudden impact that messes um up...

Well i'm a boy scout and we always get bored and play! this is a favorite pastime for us!! let see it all started back when all they had were the GOOD version, the grey old style. We were camping in a national park that had an old closed fire tower. they hadn't done anything but board up the door to the top so needless to say we proceded. we droped it from about 80ft. full, it bounced like a champ!!
we have run over one with a new hummer-- dent
thrown them with a catapult-- bounce
these are a few, but some how one of the old ones hit 1 million and we threw it and some one and--- bust! the lil hole in the bottem came out!
no prob!! alls fun, we still love them!!!
