I find a little gorilla glue and rolling it in crushed glass works. Added bonus is the texture is unmistakeable as it slides through your hand and the blood marks it clearly as yours.

Bad idea, as the knot will reduce the tensile strength of the rope, probably moreso than any of the other methods mentioned.
