Why do all the directions say to use the road by gingercake acres and not the first road (to table rock picnic area) out of morganton. That's the way I went but just wondered about the other road.

On the first road you'll more than double the time you spend driving on a gravel road. It's pretty tedious.

In reply to: Why do all the directions say to use the road by gingercake acres and not the first road (to table rock picnic area) out of morganton. That's the way I went but just wondered about the other road. Because that first road is about 13 miles on a dirt road opposed to about 7 if you turn off at Gingercake.

The first gravel road to Table Rock from Morganton is by far in the best condition of the two mentioned. Yes the first road is 13 miles, but then you are there. The Gingercake road is only about 6 miles or so but you'll have to add the extra 15 + miles of black top to get there. The first road is much quicker, thats why there is a sign for Table rock there. SECRET: There is also an unlisted road to Table Rock that is for the locals  .

^yes, the unposted road is definately for the locals... Both roads are just as fast. The milage saved on the first road is definately made up by the speed in which you can blaze across the black stuff going to Gingercake. The first road is a very tedious and shaky drive and there are some crazy people driving up and down this road. Also, I have actually ran into a few downed trees. It was one of the few times having a chain in my truck came in handy. But.... if you want to meet some of the scary/interesting locals then this is the best way to go! Also, if you're coming down at night on the weekend, there's the occasional high school party where you can grab a beer!
