Dear ladies, may I make a small intrusion into your society...

After reading here about lower and shallower heel, narrower form etc. for a perfect lady's shoe, one question stays.

In our gym and on the forums it looks like guys tend to buy smaller shoes and bear the pain (or do some fancy stretching) until those shoes fit tight.
Ladies, on the other hand, tell my wife NOT to buy small shoes. They vote for a comfortable fit from the beginning, thus going for, like, two sizes bigger than street size.

I understand a lady's foot might be softer and it could be unbearable, but come on! You wear those ballroom things to the theater we can't even dream to try on! :)

So what would you say?

I'd never tell someone to go for "two sizes bigger that street size."

Tell her to try the shoes on and get a pair that is snug. It might end up being a half size smaller than her street shoe size, or it might be exactly her shoe size.

In regards to smaller shoes in the gym, you don't have to wear them as long nor walk around in them on hard ground like you might be doing outdoors (and especially multipitch climbs) -- so tighter shoes are more bearable in that situation.

Good. We will consider that a "softie" approach then :)

We tried everything in our shop, they were all painful. Only a pair of Mad Rock Phoenixes (about her street size) was tolerable. (For me too, actually, but that is another sad story about a very wide foot...)

Thanks for your answer!

P.S. There is an equipment forum, but seems a special one for shoes is needed... :)

I'm curious now, what kinds of shoes were in the shop? Usually a shop will stock at least one fairly comfortable shoe brand.
