While running ropes (challenge) courses, I watched one of the young female instructors get her hair stuck, take out a knife, and cut herself free. When I sent my instructor up the pole, on a practice rescue, I noticed that about 25 feet up the rope, that the core was showing. Best be REAL careful with the knives all. When a rope is taut (one you're hangin' on) all you have to do is touch a knife to it and be amazed at the percentage of threads that shred. -Jason

I did the "once and never again" scenario too before. Got my hair caught during a rappel in my ATC - it wasn't that bad and I was able to get it out without any cutting or lose of hair. I still have long hair but am careful to keep it out of the ATC when I look down.

Hair and shirts can easily get sucked into an 8 if you arent careful. You were lucky that you could pull your hair out. Alternatively, you could have taken the weight off the device by a number of means - some basic self-rescue items are a good idea to have. For stuck hair or shirt, you can also use a simple foot wrap, and stand up on it. Simple and fast. It should allow you to unweight the device and quickly pull your hair out. Dave

Hah! I've got you ALL beat in the stupid rapelling tricks and idiocies category... Ok...I was feeling a little strange one day and decided to bring the Vulgarian attitude to southern ontario (Fraggle rock, so there was little chance of getting an indecent exposure charge ;) )...anywhoo....well...after the climb I rapelled down. And you know how an ATC dangles after you take the rope out of it? Well...let me tell you, those things get damend hot, as you all know....and well...if you know who the vulgarians were, you should know where I'm heading with this. I wont go out of my way to explain for fear a small child or impressionable adult may be reading  Either way it hurt. For a while.

I was teaching my 6 year old daughter how to rappel several years ago and on her first 40 ft free rap, her hair escaped her bandana and got sucked into the 8. I was just a few feet below her but didn't have a prussik with me (last time I neglected that), after a few minutes of manuvering, I was able to push her up with one hand just far enough for her to get free (she did have to pull out a hunk of hair). We got down and she looked up and saw this clump of hair still wrapped around the rope and started laughing like crazy. She never was nearly as scared as I was. I still hate raps but she still doesn't mind them. Now that she's 13, I need to teach her to reppel (boys, that is).

In reply to: In reply to: I carry a prussik with me just for situations like that. I had to rescue my daughter before, not much fun. right on, you should always have a prussik w/you scuse please, but how would you use a prussik to free yourself?

I met a guy once whos girl's hair got stuck while rappelling. It sucked all the way to her scalp and she was fecked. He felt the only option was for him to jug the rope and bring her a knife. As she went to cut her hair she accidentally cut the rope, sending both of them for a 30' ride. She landed on top of him and broke his pelvis. So the story goes......

You know, I had been pretty bummed about the fact that I'm losing my hair to male pattern baldness... After reading posts like this it doesn't seem so bad! Andy

In reply to: My dog got her tail caught in an atc on rappel. She had scrambled up an easy slab climb next the one we were on and couldn't get down by herself. Good thing I keep a knife on my harness :D . Awwww... poor doggy!! I too got my hair caught in my ATC while rapping one time. I was on a slab though, and could stand up as if belaying myself, so the hair came back with the rope. I was so relieved!! I remember thinking, (ouch, something hurts.....*silence*......shit!) Thank god it was on a slab though, if I had been hanging I would have been screwed! I have dreads now though, hopefully will never get those caught... I don't wanna yank a whole one out like Tarzan!! Eeeeeek!!

If you are on a overhanging rap and your hair/shirt/boob gets caught you need to unweight the rappel device. To do that bend your knee and lift one leg as high as you can. With your brake hand wrap the rope around your foot a couple of times and stand up in the rope. You should now be able to unweight the rappel device and get your hair out. You should be able to let go with your brake hand to fiddle with it, if need be, because, of course, you backed up your rappel with an autoblock. Brian
