The rumors are true, the park is officially out of business until further notice. Horse Pens 40 is located in northeast Alabama and home to world class "Fontainebleau like" slopey sandstone. The owners have boarded up the shop, got rid of Bud (the caretaker), and are chaining the front gate. The problem stems from internal problems with the original owner/share holder and the current mortgage holder. Due to the fact they were unable to work things out, it has ended up in court thus all funds to the park have been frozen. There are interested parties who are trying to lease the park and continue business as usual, climbing included, but nothing is final yet. The park will probably not be purchased any time in the near future (the asking price for the park is $978,000 if anyone is interested!!), so this could be an ongoing problem with the park until another party owns the park or a favorable lease situation is worked out. One future problem could be whether any new owners see climbers as a viable user group. So when the time comes, we need to be able to present ourselves as a group that will be a source of income, not problems. In any case, local climbing activist Adam Henry, assures us that he feels being closed is NOT long term and that the park should re-open by fall...just in time for good friction weather!!!! Please check SE Climbers and Southern Slopers for updates on the status of the park and what you can do to help.
