Read the Climbing Terms: http://www.rockclimbing.com/articles/term.php And the Grade Chart: http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/rankingguide.php The link above also contains Grades Explained for Beginners: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=1716&forum=16 Both located in the Left Menu Column under Atricles.

In reply to: what is topo, and what are the numbers ont the routes like 5.6 or 3.2 5.6 would be the rating of the climb--a rather weak choice. 3.2 would be the alcohol content of the beer consumed during the ascent--another weak choice. Curt

Yeah, 'no-one answered the first' might be a correct statement, except... 9 people replied to your original post before you started up this one. Qu-est que tu fais? (Just curious)

In reply to: what is topo, and what are the numbers ont the routes like 5.6 or 3.2 The other thread started with:
In reply to: #1) what's topo #2)what's all the "5.12 and 6.0 stuff every one is sayin And let's not forget the post later that same day:
In reply to: i am 5'0" eighty pound thirten year old...that's my basic stats and am better then 95% if the people that go to the gym i got to. Interesting. If I were better than 95% of the people in the Denver / Boulder area gyms, I think I'd know the meaning of a 5.12. It would be called a "warm up route".

ok. im gonna answer the grade question...at least try to. lets look at a moderate route rating...5.10 so the 5 in fron of it i its class. 1 is flat ground, 2 is incline or steep hiking, 3 is boulder hoppin, 4 is a steep grade that if unconfortable u use a rope. and class 5 is a face that u need to use a rope to climb. so thats what the 5 is infront of the ten. the second number is the wall rateing, it goes to like...5.2 i think, and some of the most difficult is 5.15 , once the rateing gets to 5.9..5.10 is broken ino letters. 5.10 a . 5.10b. 5.10c. 5.10d. get the idea? this is called the yosemite decible system, google search it if u want more info. but thats the gist of it....correct me if im wrong

OUCH!!! Can't you all take it easy on this kid he's obiously just a beginner! If no one ever took any crap from someone new at a skill like climbing, everyone who ever tried would just become frusterated and quit.

The yosemite decibel system is how loud the climbers up on the cliff are yelling. If you can hear them in the next county, that's like 5.10 decibels, in the next state - that's like 5.12 decibels.
