There is a fairly recent book out called "Traditional Lead Climbing: Surviving the Learning Years" by Heidi Pesterfield. Available from Amazon for $12.57. It's not a substitute for any of the old standards (Long, etc) but provides a broad overview of trad climbing with emphasis on staying safe.

I'd recommend it for anyone just starting out or thinking about starting trad.

Interesting to note the repeated suggestions not to try to learn trad just from a book.

Learning Trad from someone who knows seems like the best way to go. However, I don't see any harm in reading up on the subject!

I read that book and Climbing Anchors by John Long and I think it was a good idea for me as well as other beginners because when you do learn from an experienced leader you already have a good idea on the process and terms used in trad which saves your teacher time on explaining more simple things which will give them more patience to teach you more valuable info.

Freedom of the hills, Anchors by John Long, both books. And there's a cool classic Video called the "Art of Leading" by John Long.
