Driving through Wind river Canyon over christmas to visit some family, I realized that there must be lifetimes of climbable rock in this canyon. i think most of it is a sandy limestone, a little bit of metamorphosed granite and some chossy shale, but it is hard to tell from the road. I was wondering if anyone has done any climbing in this canyon. Or if you can even climb there at all. If I am not mistaken, It is nearly(if not all) indian reservation. It also looked like there might be some pretty sweet bouldering around as well. Any ideas?

yeah. it's washoe. the tribe doesn't allow climbing. you'll get fined if you get caught. a lot. btw, the ice is awesome in that canyon, too.

That's what I was afraid of. It's too bad. I'll refrain from posting my views of the quality of land management in some of these tribes.

I did some bouldering on a recent backpacking trip through the Wind River Wilderness area. Not sure of any established routes, but we had a blast bouldering anytime we stopped to take off our packs! :D

If you got a hardon for climbing in the canyon you can try to get a permit in Fort Washakie. Good luck. and thun: you are out of your element.
