In reply to: Okay so I'm thinking of moving to NC but how is the climbing? What is there to offer me? Not sure where in NC but I need to find a job too befor I make such a move. Right now I'm in the lovely MidWest Chicago! There is great climbing in North Carolina but it's all in the western part of the state. It will really depend on where you move within the state. If you live on the coast you're in for a minimum drive of two hours before you find more than a pebble and four hours to the nearest significant rock. If you move to Asheville in the mountains you'll have great climbing on your doorstep. I lived in Raleigh, which was marginal for climbing. There are a few small lousy boulders nearby but the nearest roped climbing was over two hours away. The situation is much better if you live in Winston-Salem or Charlotte. Most climbing in NC is trad and it has the reputation of being quite committing. If you like sport climbing you'll have to drive to the New River Gorge or eastern TN, depending on where you live in the state. Good luck David Collins

We have year round climbing. Mostly trad, some sport and plenty of bouldering. Lots of moderate (5.5-5.8) trad. The New River Gorge (single pitch mecca) is 2.5 hrs. from W-S and 3.5 hrs. from Charlotte.

I'd try to end up in the Asheville area although the job market may be better in Charlotte or the Winston Salem/Greensboro area... good luck

Once apon a time, NC was the hidden jewel of east coast climbing. It's the best proximity to climbing areas south of NH, unless you're on the coast.

North Carolina rocks for year round climbing. Greensboro Winston-Salem is sorta central with unless it is raining, year round climbing within 30 to 45 minutes , albeit limited to a couple quartzite location. Like others have stated, New River is the spring/fall day trip & over nighter at 2.5 hours as is the High Country around Boone. I would expect there are however more climbers in the Asheville area. Charlotte has Crowders nearby and is marginally closer to the Western NC Granite Domes. The farthest domes like PantherTown/Big Green are like 4 hours from W-S. While I am a fan of NC, I have traveled the USA and think there are of course better climbing distinations that have more rock but Carolina aint bad!

Check the routes database for NC. Lotsa rock in NC; I would say a few lifetimes worth. Granite slab climbing at Stone Mountain, Overhanging quartzite at Moores Wall, 1000' trad & aid routes at Whitesides, granite trad climbing at Looking glass, adventure trad routes in Linville gorge, bouldering in Boone, etc. And there is some sport climbing at Sauratown, and across the border at Hidden Valley, VA. Check out Harrison Shull's new photo book Southeastern Rock if you need photographic proof.

Even as a transplant to Colorado (born and bred in NC), Moore's Wall, Stone Mountain and Looking Glass will always have a special place in my heart.

Winston-Salem is a great location for a climber. There is a ton of local stone (Moores! Asheboro!), and its close to Boone, NRG and Western NC. There is an active and growing climbing community here that often climbs after work when daylight allows. Send me a PM if you need a tour or have questions.

World Class... Definately in the top 5 states to climb in, IMHO. Check the Routes DBase for that state: http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listState.php?CountryStateID=100

I live in Charlotte right now and I can drive south 30 minutes to Crowders (TR, Sport, Trad), 1.5 hrs to Winston Salem (TR in Pilot, Sport at Sauratown, Trad at Moores), 3 hours to the NRG, 2 hours to boulder in Boone, 2 hours to trad at Stone or Asheville (all approximate times). Can it get more amazing than this??? NC is great for climbing! The weather stays pretty mild year round, so its totally possible to climb year round. I've only climbed about a year and seriously, I feel as though NC is this huge playground of climbing that I haven't even scratched the surface of! On top of that, the climbers here are super-nice and always willing to help out. I have made a ton of new friends both at the gym and out at the crags. Everyone's got that southern hospitality thing going!

Maybe you should consider near Charlotte. The Charlotte/Mecklenburg School System is the new benchmarch for SNAFU.

Hey, I'm a Midwesterner too, so I know your not afraid to drive to climb so.. If you could find something in the Boone area, you'd have tons of awesome bouldering potential, plus you'd be withing 4-5 hours or places such as the NRG, the RRG, Chatanooga area, possible Rocktown, and even closer to the Obed. Lots of potential down there! Good luck.

Okay so the Climbing is looking good, the move is looking like the Charlotte area. Now just need to find a JOB and I'm there! Maybe I could hook up with someone to show me the climbing over the summer when/if I make it there. I need to get out of the Midwest...too cold high of 13 today! :x

North Carolina is just great for climbing. Don't let anyone snob you any other way. I've lived here my whole life, and I've had plenty to do. Looking Glass is fab as far as West NC goes, but don't let Pilot Mountain near Winston-Salem fool you. It's my backyard, and it's a TR or single pitch lead blast. Crowder's near Charlotte gets real, well, crowded, as does Moore's Wall. PLUS, awesome bouldering at Rumbling Bald... I watched Sharma blow up there. Sweeeeet.

Two words: Linville Gorge! Definitely my favorite climbing area in western NC...It's got everything from top-roping to multi-pitch and even a small bouldering area next to the parking lot.
