Trivial question....How do you define your on-sight level?

I was reading a post where the author asked folks to fess up on how hard the on-site, and it made me wonder....if you were to tell some one how hard you on-sight, would you tell them your hardest on-sight, the level you think you currently on-sight, or a more general description "I usually on-sight such-and-such".

I ask cuz it varies tremendously for me...I might on-sight 4 letter grades different on overhanging, well-protected, Red Rocks sport but that's entirely different than slightly run-out Cochise slab. Ya know what I mean?

Just curious.

For myself the sport is to one degree about the moment, and this being the case, I would only feel comfortable replying to the question with an answer that pertains to the number that I could lead at that moment, anything else is history(past), or speculation(future).

Say what ever makes you happy. I'd go buy what you can onsight 75% of the time. Usually sport and trad are going to be different.

I'd say there are a numebr of factors that go into such a responce. Mostly depends on who I was talking to. Is this a knowledgable person that will see through my BS? Is this a hottie? Will this person ever actaully climb with me and if they do would we attempt anything near my onsite ability? These are all very important factors when you desided how to describe your onsite ability.

I would say a hottie that can't climb as hard as me anyway will never know the truth so I'd tell here I am about a 12d onsiter. Joe hardman that I just met @ C4 and needs a partner for the day I am probably about a 5.8 so I don't look like a fool later on. But just chatting over beers at the end of the day I'd go with my hardest lead ever that noone nearby saw me fall on.

I would say that your on-sight level is the level that you consistantly on-sight at, no matter what the rock conditions or area.

I'd say that my onsight level tends to vary depending on what type of climbing I'm doing. Sport, trad, multi-pitch, alpine, etc. can vary a lot, sometimes just depending on the committment level. Numbers aside, I'd rate my level by what I was willing to try at any particular moment.

I think we push harder onsighting because of the unknown. That is also why I tend to onsight below my ability....and I think for others too. But if it were a true onsight you would only be going by what you can see of the rock in front of you. Does knowing the grade and some info about pro and such not make it a true onsight or am I getting to pureist?
