The Smell of Climbing

My wife won't ride in my truck because she says it has that "climbing smell." I, for one, appreciate the smells associated with climbing; it's part of the allure. My favorite is the combination of sweat, chalk, and grime, not to mention that climbing shoe smell. No other sport comes close to the smell of climbing.

Maybe it's not normal, but you know that everyone who reads this post, whether they'll admit to it or not, will be thinking, "Yep, I know the exact smell he's talking about. MMMmmmmm... climbing." 8)

My friends mom won't let him take bring his snow board boots in his house. That's pretty smelly.
On the stinky shoe issue I once left my aces in my bronco over night. It smelled in there for a month.

Start playing ice hockey. Keep all your gear in the bag until you're ready to use it again. Store said bag in an area she frequents. She'll start to appreciate the "climbing smell".

Abnormal? I just checked out your profile pic... nuff said. I help coach high school football and we wash practice gear about once a week; now that's a rancid odor. Climbing smell, on the other hand, reminds me of the stuff of life. While this smell may not be refreshing, it is a comforting reminder of the long days of pushing yourself and living. Don't you agree?

When I really want it to be spring again, I open up my bag of climbing stuff and smell my shoes and gear. It makes me happy, even if it's just for a moment.

*sigh*

You're right, this is SO not normal.

LOL

I kinda dig the smel too

I have this friend who is a big archery hunter well one day I stopped at his house to pick him up to do something well I noticed his scent elimator spray for hunting well I went to town on my car. It actually helps to cut the really bad end of summer stench when only you the car owner can stand it after being in the car for a bit.

NOT normal. I hate it when my car gets that climbing smell, it's like stale old locker room smell. I like a clean car, but it's pretty hard to keep it that way when you go road trippin every weekend. Oh well, at least my car does NOT smell like climbing.

My truck smells weird if I leave my gear in it for long.

thing is, my shoes, except for my crap mountain masters which I have only worn 2-3 times, smell OK.

I think it is the ropes. They maybe get a litte damp from just being out then they get coiled up and tossed in the back. I have 3-4 ropes in my truck at any given time.

Well I don't know about my shoes.... I try and keep my face away from them...
But for some strange reason I like the way ropes end up smelling.

I should clarify my post to you (tucson). You have the classic dirt-bag (in a good way) aura about you. I wish I had hair like that. The smell of fear, perspiration, concentration, and exhileration, not to mention, determination, are all about you in your pics. AHHH... odiferous wonder.

I like the smell of rock, or at least associate it with all the good times I've had. I can't say I like the smell of myself after a weekend of climbing and camping.

Despite the fact that we were quite smelly after my first day of climbing (it was toproping), my partner and I went to a pretty nice restaurant. I commented on how smelly I was. He quipped "thats the smell of fear". I have to admit, I always smell worse after I have been really scared. I run often. The smell isn't the same.

most climbers aren't normal!

I for one know that smell... chalk, sweat, grime, man I love it!
Its so funny when we go climbing/camping for a few days, and we havent bathed, and then we walk by normal people and they smell so good... just bc we sneak... haha good times!

I got all excited when I saw your title beacuse I thought, "OHHH! Someone who thinks like me!" But I think I have a different relationship with the scents of climbing than you do. So let me share :D .......

I love to smell my hands after a day of climbing because each crag has her own scent. For instance, when I climb
the monk
, there is this scent on my hands of that rock ---- oh, and it reminds me of the first time I ever strapped on a climbing harness, tied a figure eight, and felt that wind that whips up and around the exposed cliff walls. Yes!.
And I'm also reminded of the time I took two of my friends to the top of the free standing pinnacle on a humid July evening. We watched the sun go down over downtown Phoenix and saw a monsoon storm rising in the north. I remember ooohing and ahhhing at the bright purple flashes striking the sky with the red, yellow and orange to the west. After rappelling and hiking back to the car in the dark, they treated me to a few Dos Equis ambers at a fancy downtown scottsdale bar - we wore our sweat drenched t-shirts and shorts, and even left the headlamps on our heads.

That's just one of the smells of climbing that I think about. I'm in euphoria now....

Thanks

crimpman

Oh man I know exactly what you're talking about! I don't know how to describe it but I always get a good feeling when I smell that smell. But you know, but I don't think they should bottle this scent... I don't know if I'd like to spay "climbing" in my house... It's good, but not THAT good.
