Hey you all. I was just wondering what you climbers perfere; ATC or Gri-Gri. I like the ATC because i feel more in control and is easyer for me in belaying a lead. But I like the Gri-Gri in belaying a top rope. So what do you all think???

I prefer ATC for leading and gri-gri for toproping. But I think it all comes down to personal preference... By the way, what does this have to do with competition climbing?? or were you referring to the use of belay devices for competitions??

Gri-Gri when I know I'll be on a route for a while on toprope, when aid climbing (but then you gotta find soemthing to keep your belayer awake  ) or TR soloing. ATC for normal run of the mill stuff. I'm thinkin I might be ditching the gri gri for a TRE though. Those things look nice...

I agree I prefer the ATC on Lead belaying, and normal "run of the mill stuff" and I prefer the Gri Gri on Top-rope...

I prefer ATC! The gri gri just doesn't have that personal touch! And you can't drink beer and use a gri gri at the same time! But if you can, let me know, and I will start using one!

Definitely the ATC. A gri gri is too heavy and bulky to haul up a few pitches, and it doesn't even rap. My gym has 'em permanently attached to each toprope. This is probably their strongest application. I might eventually turn it into a solo device, but until then, it's the ATC for me.

ATC... better feel and more versitile. not to mention a lot cheaper! I would upgrade to a variable friction device similiar to the ATC-XP, or BRD just to be able to change friction depending on the load.

ATC XP all the way. They're smooth and they catch really good. I'd use it for top rope in the gym too but they have the gri-gri's on the rope already. Gri-gri's are OK but they're bulky and slow.

I use a Gri-Gri for sport climbing. The GRi Gri is more static because it locks the rope off immediately. When trad climbing I use an ATC. The ATC is more dynamic because the rope slides throught the device and it won't shock the gear as much.

ATC for sure. Nothing mechanical about it. Leaves you in complete control of the rope.

okay, so people are talking about the xp, but what does it do that a normal everyday atc won't? or is it just smoother?
