My girlfriend and i have had an ongoing debate on what is safer Rock climbing or Scuba diving. My argument is that climbing may have a higher likely hood of injury then scuba diving but still safer (but if it has a higher likely hood of injury, I guess it would be more dangers), but does anyone have an opinion or know where I can find stats on sport related injures?

I do both id say rock climbing is more dangerous because so much can go wrong but overall they are both safe and fun.

Not really sure where to find the statistics about climbing deaths, but here is a site that should give you an indication of the scuba diving fatalities... http://www.mindspring.com/~divegeek/risk.htm

I also do both and this is just a guess, but I'd say there are more climbing related injuries and deaths than scuba related ones.

not to get off topic, but the most dangerous sport, imo, is basketball

Don't know about anywhere else, but in the UK, climbing is the most dangerous sport apart from "air sports".

It depends on your definition of "climbing". What type of climbing are you talking about? Sport Climbing and Bouldering are probably safer than scuba diving High altitude mountaineering is almost definately more dangerous than scuba dving Trad and Aid depend on what level of climbing you are doing

When I applied for life insurance last year, the application had a section about hazardous activities. It specifically asked about scuba diving, flying private aircraft, hangliding, sky diving, and race car driving. Nothing about rock climbing. Apparently, the actuaries for that insurance company don’t consider rock climbing to be a hazardous activity. I was approved as an “ultra low risk” applicant. Little do they know... -BBB

I do both and have to say that diving must be safer. No stats, but I have never been terrified while diving. I have done a lot of diving. With sharks, sea snakes, wrecks, cold water, brown water, night, big walls, etc.... After reading that list maybe I am just too stuipid not to be scared while diving. However, since I sometimes find myself scared while climbing, I must not be too stupid to be scared. That doesn't rule out being too stupid though.

That's a tuff one... I think one way to look at it is margin for error. In both sports, the margin for error is very low. The risks, however, are very different, so it is difficult to say, unless you're an expert on both sports. I look at it like this: Worst case scenario, YOU'RE GOING TO DIE... so which would you prefer? Drowning? or HITTING THE GROUND (with a splat)? I think which ever manner of death scares you the most, is probably the more dangerous of the two -- for you. Now, that is not to consider breaking bones and remaining conscious at the bottom of a wall, or getting clobberd from above and slowing bleeding to death as you hang in oblivion. On the other hand, suffering miserably as the jelly fish burn your body, and sharks start nibbling at your limbs could be equally miserable, which again becomes a matter of personal preference as to the kind of pain one would endure before death... I guess what I'm trying to say is, "I haven't got a clue." I'd rather go peacefully in my sleep... James

"Crying out loud" would have to be rock climbing, as it would be difficult to do so under water. :?

After doing easily over 2000 dives, I have to ask.... Just how do you hurt yourself diving? Hold your breath and blow your bc? How else? I've run out of air at 100ft, its still pretty easy to surface. I been bit by animals, it goes away. Swept away by a nuts current, and damn near run over by boats. Have yet to shoot myself with a spear gun, and have tumbled in surf beyond my ability to handle. Still not yet injured in the water. So unless your very creative, its not that easy to get hurt diving. Cheers, bill

for scuba injuries, check out PADI, either their website or through a dive shop. ther should be some record of reported accidents. fur sure they will have Hyperbaric chamber info. it should be easy to find out about climbing.

In reply to: What is even the point of the debate? Good question, I don't think there is one... I just like the mindless babble about two totally unrelated activities. (Call it a mental break...)

scuba is much more dangerous. look at the statistics. climbing (with the exception of aide) does not leave you 100% at the mercy of your gear's dependability. scuba does. anything goes wrong with your scuba gear, and you could very easily be screwed. climbing affords you more options for fixing or jerry-rigging bum gear. however, one must look at the relative activity level of the participants in both sports. climbers endure pretty high levels of physical stress, whereas a good diver can remain rather calm retain more energy. when one gets tired, one is more prone to error. either way, all factors weighed, I'd say scuba is still definitly a more risky sport. (all of this depends on the participant and the level to which they want to take their sport)

personally by that time i lived in florida, i did scuba diving in crystal river and of course oceans. i had to take a scuba diving class to get diving license before i went exploring. if you take class, u know more safe from diving class. so now i m hooked on climbing. you have someone to teach you the climbing stuffs so u wud know safe. i havent injuried myself in 10 yrs from climbing. as long as you know the safety in both sports, you wud be fine.

It depends a lot on what type of climbing you do, and what type of diving you do. Not all dives or climbs are created equal, and there is probably a lot of overlap in the danger department. At the extremes of each, you mess up (or have a bit of bad luck), you die. Now if you were climbing a mountain on Mars while wearing a space suit, you'd almost be combining the two. You could probably add skydiving to it if you jumped out of your spaceship on the way down to get to the base of the mountain. Once you get to the top, you could try to find a way to hanglide in the thin atmosphere, then once back on the ground, do a little caving to look for alien artifacts.

i asked my lecturer if he liked rock climbing, he said it was ok... after that he suggested scuba diving to us ( a small bunch of students chatting with him). Later, when i walked away, i overheard him saying to my friend... "why would someone be crazy enough to go rock climbing that is so dangerous as opposed to scuba diving ?" But of coz i didn't say a thing. But rock climbing rocks once u get hooked on it. Scuba diving on the other hand, doesn't get you pumped up or excited.. and it cost less too. There isn't much skills underwater as opposed to rock climbs.. wonder......
