Climbing slippers on my feet in my WW kayak many times (works out well) sport gear a few times in my kayak. I took my climbing gear in my canoe several times. I made sure everything was hooked to something so one way or another it would end up floating if the boat tipped. Ropes and shoes were in dry bags. In general taking climbing gear in a canoe or a kayak is somewhat of a pain if you are at all worried about tipping. Mostly I'd rather do one or the other with a few execptions (for me it sounded neater than it turn out to be). However taking shoes to boulder over the water or on land is almost without exception awesome as long as you are with like minded or patient people.
Edit: Float trip my definition (may not be the same as the poster); a self powered boat trip in which you can spend much of your time "floating" down the river generally on the long side (can be days) can include some sections of moderately hard white water as long as it's pretty well with in your limits. If you ever think you might die or be maimed on the trip (from the water not mosquitoes) it automatically disquallifies the trip as a float trip no matter how much of the trip you spend floating.

I try to. The climbing gear usually loses out to food and camping gear since I normally take long trips. Any extra stuff loses its charm quickly during portages. I have a sea kayak, so portages are a pain in the ass anyway, by definition. I usually just end up taking my shoes.
It is fun to load your entire rack in the boat for a 1 or 2 day paddle, though. Plenty of room for beer too :)
