There aren't too many different name types for holds or general categories, I will see if I can get them: There are crimpers. These are very small lips on the rock, the may be incut, positive or negative. They are usually very small and entail putting your hand in a crimp postion and holding on with the tips of your fingers. There are jugs. These are big holds that you can sink your hand into. Sometimes called buckets, these holds are very nice to hold onto and are often saving graces. They are most often found in indoor gyms on either very easy routes or very steep routes. There are slopers. these are those hold that are often similar in shape to half of a soccer ball glued onto a wall. You need something called contact strength for these holds or open hand strength. There are horns. Simply these look like horns sticking out of the rock. There are pockets. These are holes inside the rock or indoor climbing holds where 1-2-3- or 4 fingers can be placed. There are pinches. These are holds that need to be pinched in order to be held. I think that is just about it. All of these holds vary infinitely in size and shape and are quite different to climb on depending on the type of rock you are on. I hope this helped.

In reply to: Can someone describe/articulate the Gaston (and reverse Gaston)? Gaston -- Thumb-down sidepull. Reverse Gaston (Hadn't heard this one) -- Thumb-up sidepull ? Gaston Rebuffat developed the opposition technique of essentially trying to pull the walls of the crack apart. Particularly useful to ascend a shallow slot defined by offset edges that offer no other cracks or holds or other means of ascent. Brutus of Wyde Old Climbers' Home Oakland, California

In reply to: I am not some verm pretending to be a sixteen year old girl... I AM a 16 year old girl... you guys are probably the virm rockclimbergirl: verm is a famous climber. I think din is just joking around, but you are right to be cautious about this group! Another hold is a "chicken head". It's something like a knob sticking out of the rock. Sometimes you can cinch a sling around one for protection. It's great that you are getting into climbing.
