In the community forum, we have 2 threads dedicated to just plain ole quotations. We need a thread for quotations that are strictly related to climbing. Bring 'em on, peeps!

This is not about a climber, but is somewhat related. It refers to the south pole conquerers. I strongly suggest you to read about Shackleton adventures in the south seas!! “For scientific leadership, give me Scott, for swift and efficient travel give me Amundsen. But when you are in a hopeless situation, when you are seeing no way out, get done on your knees and pray for Shackleton” Sir Raymond Priestley. a member of the 1907-09 Nimrod Expedition.

Here is the quotes.txt file which the random quotes script, at the top of the forum index, reads from. All climbing quotes.

No offense to whoever put that file together, but I'm not entirely fond of those quotes. That's why I started the thread, because I thought we could come up with some better ones, and then use them for the rotating random quotes script.

Those quotes are rad! There's about 50 or so 'literature' climbing quotes in there as well, they don't come up that often though

My personal favorite comes from one of my climbing partners: "You put the atc through the middle loop because, while I'll put it through both main loops to protect *my* area, you're on your own with *yours.*" Loops being the tie-in leg loops and middle loop and the effect of 'crunching' said area.

Inez Drixelius. "Why? Why, why, why do I do this???" Chuck Pratt. "Vertigo I can handle alright It's horizonto that drives me nuts." "It should be understood that these men (El Cap climbers) were not climbing any more than a stenographer going up an elevator was climbing. They were hoisting themselves up on a series of crude pulleys. The skill required is that required to drive a nail. Their courage is beyond question. It is exactly that of the bull in the arena. Confused and tormented by something far beyond their understanding, they react to the sight of the cliff as the bull to the cape. Not knowing why, they charge." - Thomas L.P. Davies, 1970 "Maybe I should have stuck with sports car driving." - Warren Harding [ This Message was edited by: apollodorus on 2002-03-22 20:58 ]

"People say the we're searching for the meaning of life. I don't think that's it at all. I think that what were seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive." - Joseph Campbell hasbeen uses this quote at the end of his emails. I think it is such a great quote and so relevant to why most people climb even if it is not from a climber.

black diamond gear catalogues are excellent sources of good quotes. Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free. - Jim Morrison Climbing. It seems so simple and direct when you're out there, surging upward with a lungful of bright air. Simple alright, it simply took over my life. - Doug Robinson In this short span between my fingertips and the smooth edge and these tense feet cramped to a crystal ledge, I hold the life of a man. - Geoffrey Winthrop Young A few hours of mountain climbing turn a villain and a saint into two rather equal creatures. Exhaustion is the shortest way to equality and fraternity. - Freidrich Nietzsche It's the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. - Robert Pirsig It is not a good thing to look at great walls for too long a time. - Yvon Chouinard Climbing may be hard, but it's easier than growing up. - Ed Sklar I needed to clear my head, get some priorities... so I dropped out of college and went climbing. - Ryan Frost
