Hey climbers, Every time I climb I get the worst bruises on my knees. Other climbers have told me that "real climbing" doesn't give you bruises. But no matter how hard I try I always seem to end up w/bruises on my knees after climbing. So is it normal to get these?Thanx.

How long have you been climbing? The truth is that as you get more style and balance you won't get bruises in strange places. I still get them occasionally too. More practice, more practice.....

Just the subject I was talking about earlier today... 5 months...I've been at it... Bruises, are so common on my body... Knees, inside both legs...Then there's just the fact that I have black and blue knee caps...all the time... I can't show a single picture, as of late...that My arms, right at the bicep, or inside elbows...aren't black and blue??? I've been told...anemia... Iron...deficiency. I also power climb a lot... Tend to see the damage later. I've got some doooosies... Grace points, I may not get...but, I send them. I smile.. My trophy for that day???? Bruises and callouses!!! I'll take that anyday!!! I carry pride with this statement!! T

I'm sorry, did you say "real climbing?" Real climbing...as opposed to fake climbing? I gotta know what's up.

Quote:Other climbers have told me that "real climbing" doesn't give you bruises. I have to strongly disagree w/ that. At least from what I've found, "real" climbing almost always produces nicks, scratches, cuts, bruises and more! Ask any crack climber if what they're doing is "real" climbing - you'll almost never emerge unscathed from a crack climb, no matter how graceful you make it look. I wouldn't sweat it - wear them as badges of honor - besides, chicks dig scars and bruises aren't bad either. Mick

I'm all about the bruises and the cuts. I don't remember the real color of my knees, and I don't know how many times I've had to suffer washing the dishes because of cuts on the outside of every joint on every finger. Whoever climbs without getting bruises and/or cuts isn't trying hard enough! (But pulling off big bleeding flaps of finger skin is definitely NOT cool...) Well, there are rules about using your knees. In the gym, not allowed. On the rock, not allowed.... ....until..... ....you can lead 5.10 trad. At which point, you may mantel on your knees to your heart's content! [HISTORICAL NOTE: It was for reasons of style, and for the purpose of showing how bitchin' you were because you didn't use your knees, that climbers in the late 70's wore WHITE PANTS. I do not know why they wore [font color="red"]red bandanas, however.]

I'm inevitibly bruised whether it be from climbing or lacrosse goaltending, but I can never figure out why the knees are always discolored after a day spent climbing. I swear, I'm not that clumsy. Sheeeesh. I like to think that's a natural part.

Oh My Gosh,... I think that's half the reason I climb is for the bruises and the cuts and scrapes, and well, The BLOOD! There is nothing better than going home after a hard day of "Real" climbing, haha... and showing everyone your medals. My wife just rolls her eyes, but that's okay... I play show and tell anyway! If there's no Bruise, scrape, cut or blood, it's not a climb!

If you just started climbing than off course. Your panicing too much, relax more on the wall, and avoid dyno's.

If you're concerned about walking away from a route unscathed then DO NOT climb at Joshua Tree. Nearly every climber I know comes away bruised and bloody from the Cheese grater rock we lovingly call our home. personally I give blood to mother rock nearly every weekend.

Bruises, bruises, bruises. Thats part of climbing, BUT, you will find the more your technique improves the less your knees will get knocked up! Technique, technique, technique..keep trying man! STIG

I'm anemic and bruise easily, so when I first started I'd come home with bruises on my knees all the time - but as technique gets better and climbing less sluggish, the bruises are less frequent. Things are looking up - I only come home with knee bruises about once a month now.

Those neoprene knee brace/cuff things they sell at Rite-Aid/Thrifty should do the trick. If any body asks, tell them you used to play rugby.

I too always get scrapes and bruises when I climb. It's a given if you're climbing on rock. My skin bruises really easily anyhow, so my knees always have bruises on them when I climb. I don't think it's an issue of 'real climbing.'

When I first started climbing it looked like some one was hitting me with a baseball bat right on my knees!! I would never feel my knees hitting the rock but I would always have bruises to show off!! KAY

Its all about balance hun, but you do get scrapes and bruises lol, it just something that I thought came with the territory. As you climb more you will be able to manover so you wont get AS MANY bruises... then eat alot of banannas! it helps the bruses [ This Message was edited by: lostangel on 2002-03-24 16:20 ] [ This Message was edited by: lostangel on 2002-03-24 16:21 ]
