My little cousin was climbing and the rope failed at 15 feet. He fell on his but and arms. Broke all the bones in both his arms, the right femur and got perforated in the left lung by a rib. I do not know if he is brave or stupid, but he went back to the rock only 5 months after the accident.

What do you mean the rope failed? It broke? Or his pro pulled?

well, this points out the importance of having an experienced mentor or teacher, especially when you're young.

OKay... I might have no idea about climbing. But this 13 year old kid was stupid The little info I know about climbing, the only way a rope can fail is if it is overused or old!! So the kid didn't look at the rope to make sure it was alright. It was the child's fault. Fawn

Fawn, I don't know if the kid was quite, STUPID, as you put, but more along the lines of inexperienced and uneducated.

I completely agree with beerandblood Here's a shining example of this that someone sent me today. Scary! I see stuff like this at the gym all the time. Just a few months ago, a guy tied into the little elastic piece below your belay loop that keep your leg loops from shifting. Needless to say, when he got to the top and leaned back, he fell the 30 ft to the ground. No serious injuries which is a miracle, but come on!!!! Climbing is fun and all, but it is not a game ! Everytime you climb, you are putting your life and your partners life on the line. If you think any differently, PLEASE! Find another hobby!

it's not the "kids" fault, it's the PERSONS fault. s--- happens, despite there age. I'm sure people are giving more sympathy because he is 13, and by all means, I do feel sorry for the guy. I hate having the reputation of not knowing what i'm doing, when infact I see ADLUTS doing all kinds of stupid things, like belaying off 2 pices of gear, or lead belaying with a figure 8 laying down. Where's the belayer? The belayer plays a role in this too. And was leading or top roping? Fawn LeMay
