The only soloer I know who died actually soloing (besides DanO) was Derek Hershey. He died on Sentinal Rock on Chouinard-Herbert? (I don't have my guidebook now) in Yosemite. I do not actually know what he looks like, but that's the best I can do. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

Not sure if this guy was on any TV program... and I can't remember his name. This guy I'm thinking of was very famous for his solo climbs. He was ripped and had long hair. He was featured on "Climbing" mag from last year (it was an annual edition and stayed on the newstands for 3 months). It shouldn't be hard to find a picture of him at their site: http://www.climbing.com After years of soloing some of the hardest climbs unroped he died in an automobile accident. Hope this helps Andy

The guy Andy is talking about is Wolfgang Gullich. He was THE man. Way ahead of his time. Action Direct put up by him in like 1991 is still one of the hardest climbs in the world and is the benchmark 9a. He developed campus rings to train him to do the route. I don't know if he was big into soloing or not but he was kind of the poster guy for a while and the 80's and early 90's when he climbed they wore spandex. Here's two pictures http://www.stud.fee.vutbr.cz/~xnovak30/images/wg/w3.jpg http://edicionesdesnivel.com/roca/images/Gullich_small.jpg The other guy mentioned, Dano, short for Dan Osman was pretty big into soloing. He made what's called static jumping popular. He died when his rope broaek going for a world record jump. He had long black hair. I don't know Derek Hershey and I couldn't find a picture of Dan Osman. Hope this helps. [ This Message was edited by: qacwac on 2002-03-23 20:25 ]

Dan Osman did not die soloing, he was rope jumping like quawac said. I'll look for a pic of Dan, I think I 've got a really cool one of him flagging on free solo.

It sounds like your talking about Dan Osman, He is a few videos, He's in the movie Hard Rock Master of stone II. He's the only bad ass I know that had enough B*lls to wear pink lycra. In this video he is soloing some sick climbs. It has some great footage of him at yosemite taking huge falls after cutting all his pro. Hope this helps Rockjunky

My vote is for Dan Osman being the one you're looking for. Check out Masters of Stone IV also. Has footage of him free-soloing a 5.7, 400+ foot climb at Lovers Leap in just over 4 minutes. He RAN up the cliff and did an awesome leap for a hold near the top with all fours OFF the rock, 400' up!

It does sound like Wolfgang Gullich. He used to wear pretty wacky lycra leggings. Can you give a better description of him? Where was the climbing film or what Continent. What else can you remember? Ang

Addiroids there have been more than just two climbers die from soloing. Pic up an issue of climbing and you will see one everynow and then. And dan o didn't die soloing. The guy she maybe talking about is the dude who has one hand on a bar pulling himself vertical. I have seen pictures of him doing one finger pullups. Used to climb with Wolfgang Gulich. And Gulich did solo quite a bit, Seperate Reality 5.12a overhang...cover of climbing.... E.B.
