Hey Mountainrat, Backclipping occurs when you clip the rope into a carabiner upside down. When you proceed higher, the rope twists the carabiner over and could result in the rope unclipping itself. Z-clipping is hard to describe but usually happens when you place gear close together and clip a higher piece with a lower portion of the rope. The resulting path that the rope would take follows piece #1..#3..#2 and sort of forms a "Z" shape. As you move higher rope drag will probably stop you and piece #2 might lift out of place. Did that make any sense?

Z-clip Clipping the highest point of protection with a section of rope pulled up from below the last piece you clipped. Halts upward progress. Fishbait explained it well. Personally i havent seen anyone run into the Z clipping problem. If you grap the rope a few inches from your harness and pull it up through the draw you'll have no problem. As for backclipping it happens... Just make sure you double check as your passing the bolt.

I dont get how back clipping can apply to trad climb though. once you get a 2 foot sling on the gear, it doesnt matter if you backclip. Clip On, Jeremy
