 At my job, we just recently closed out our smaller sized Metolius TCU's and my cost is 20 dollars a piece rather than retail 50.00. Herein lies my deliemma, I currently have done very little trad climbing, however I own a set of nuts sizes 1-10 and doubled up on 7 through 10. I have a few tiny brass ones also. Should I buy the TCU's for this price???? I want to trad climb but don't know if I should spend the money on hexes which I currently own none of...or is the 20 dollars a cam to good to pass up....what are your thoughts. I'm a full-time college student with limited funds but I can live pay-check to paycheck no probs. Thank you for the input.

Get the TCUs and buy me some, too . .. I just bought a bunch of wall gear because I got a deal, and I am in poverty right now.

You already know the answer, you just want to hear someone else say it. Yes, buy the TCU's, actually, buy doubles. You will rarely ever see that price again.

YES YES YES YES YES!!! Buy them. You won't regret it. You may never find a deal like this again, and you will probably end up needing a set of TCU's sooner or later anyway.

Verbal, yeh you knew what I was thinking :) Thanks for the motivation guys. I'm dropping a hundred bucks this friday for them....don't know how many months or years it will be before I use them(all soft sketchy limestone here in ohio) but at least I'll have them for when the moment arises. Do you guys think I should double up on the "0" size???It looks so damn small...... ....I guess I'm going to be begging my friends for a place to crash at school seeing how I'm not going to have any gas money to drive the hour and a half home now:D

At that price, I'd double up on the O. Not because you need two on your rack, but it is the first one to wear out. With that little of an expansion range, you don't have to wear much off of the lobes to wear it out. May be a non issue if you climb mostly soft limestone though.

In reply to: ....don't know how many months or years it will be before I use them(all soft sketchy limestone here in ohio) but at least I'll have them for when the moment arises. Son, I have two words for you: Seneca Rocks. If you're in SE Ohio, you're maybe three hours away. Seneca's almost an ideal place to learn trad (it's where I and many others learned). There are great routes in all grades from 5.3 on up. Find someone to drive you over there and show you the basics. I started out TR'ing in the Hocking Hills. Unless there's been some new discovery of wonderful rock in the area, don't lead there. You will, of course, need some larger gear. You'll need someone to teach you, anyway, so try to find a mentor with a rack and you can supplement from your gear. Or, get a set of hexes and fill in with cams as you can afford them (spring's still two months off). Just make sure you understand the climbing system, making placements and setting anchors before you jet off. Good luck.

Kingman, yep. Anyhow I'm going to get them. I've known about Seneca Rocks. Backpacked there years ago with some friends. I didn't realize trad was hot there but apparently it is after talking to some guys here at school. I will definently go that way this spring...and to WV, and Ky. Mandrake, I also started on top-rope hear in the H.H. Some super nice ice was down hear for awhile too. Getting into that next year. I'll change the thread title to prevent further let-downs.
