Why climbers are so nice??

I was just wondering:

I got into a discussion with a friend about poaching a boat ride on someone's speed boat when we were in Havasu, and my friend said, "Not all people are like climbers."

This made me think. Are all climbers really that nice that they would go out of their way to help you?

Personally I would let anyone who came through the area crash at my house even if it meant that they would sleep in my bed and I had to sleep on the floor. All other climber-friends I know (except one for sure) would do the same. I would fire up the grill, offer them a beer, and just sit down and shoot the sheat. Hell, if I had a washer and drier, I would offer it to them to do their laundry.

So I ask you, what makes us so damn nice (except for that one)??? Is it because we have been in the same situation before? On that long road trip and just looking for a floor to crash on and a hot shower? Or is it something else??

TRADitionally yours,

Cali Dirtbag

well, i wouldn't go as far as letting someone have my bed (since i've got three other futons/hide-a-beds) , but if anyone from this place or bouldering.com, offthedeck.com, thedeadpoint.com, newenglandbouldering.com, cascadeclimbers.com or rec.climbing were cruising through the area, i'd get them drunk as hell, feed them well, offer great accomodations, and give a tour or 2 or 3 of the local climbing areas.

i've met a number of climbing people from the internet and have never had less than a great experience.

peace.

i've often wondered the same thing. maybe i'm just lucky to meet a ton of decent climbers, i dunno. sometimes i tell my parents or friends how when you get out on the rocks everyone you run into is most likely gonna be super nice to you and easy to talk to...its really weird...i wish more people were climbers where i lived....but as far as WHY?...i have no idea...maybe its the fact that we all know we have at least one thing in common and that breaks a lotta barriers and gives us something in common to talk about....just a guess

"maybe its the fact that we all know we have at least one thing in common and that breaks a lotta barriers and gives us something in common to talk about....just a guess"

May i rephrase that?

"Its Deffinately due to the fact that we all know we have at least one thing in common and that breaks a lotta barriers and gives us something in common to talk about"

Hate to break the momentum but there are a few who are just complete *asholes.

I gotta question, can we swear on this homepage? Not that i mean too but there is just sometimes no other word available.

Well, think about it: You spend your day hanging out in the outdoors. Maybe you drove a long way to be there. You've learned how to set up anchors and place pro. You have mastered the art of belaying. You love climbing.

(1) Sunshine and fresh air is good for the disposition
(2) You're patient as evidenced in your commute/approach.
(3) You're conscientious as evidenced in your concern for safety.
(4) You are willing to give up time and energy, as well as take on the risk of handling another's life - at the expense of your own climbing ability, making you unselfish.
(5) Common ground.
You also are more open to criticism (advice on improving) and more willing to get stoked for people who take this advice to heart, and therefore get some majorly positive feed back.

YOu tell me why climbers are so nice.

I think its cuz we're always playing with our (chalk)balls.

I have had the same experience. Climbers are almost always (almost) extremely nice.

Hey, anyone can crash at my place if they can put up with a crying newborn!

I have the answer
#1. Dont trust climbers "too" much. Ive seen many a post and many a stories where people thought their gear was safe because only locals and climbers came through the area. It was still stolen.
2#. Basically climbers are really nice people to other climbers. Why? Well i find this in most any smaller sport. We are a tightly wound group of people. The same goes for people like white water rafters, skyjumpers, anything thats small. We are so intrigued to find people who enjoy are sport we have no reason not to like them.

The operative discussion is why climbers are so nice. Well, possibly it is because nice people tend to do nice things...

I also maountain bike and I have found that mountain bikers tend to be the very same way, You meet a fellow biker for the first time and the two of you becoem instant buddies, inviting each other over for drinks and BBQ, planning road trips, naming your children after them.

My take on this is that I feel that rock climbing and biking are cool, therefore anyone who participates in the sports must be pretty cool too, until they prove otherwise. I want to be with adn socialize with other people with common interests. Many social barriers are overcome immediately because of your common interests.

Also, If I were travelling and needed some form of help; food lodging, laundry service, guide to local area, I would want a local to hook me up. Therefore I do what I can to hook others when they are visiting my playground.

My theory on this is that climbers have to be nice. we have to be nice to each other because when you are climbing you have to share the rocks, and sharning space with mean people is no fun. the other is that we have to be nice to land owners so they let us keep on using their land. and all the last is because climbers are just good people

It's not an activity based on human competition. There isn't that need to beat everyone around you. That leads to a laxed relationship.

That, and climbing is just phat. Phat activities lead to phat people. And phat people are nice.

Just my two cents
1. climbing is such an international language, doesn't matter if you are from North America, Europe or Asia. Live in a city or village.
2. we all love the outdoor, the sunshine and the beautiful scenes around the world. In another words, we are all down to earth folks. And very easy to get along with.
3. there's not really a lot of "right" and "wrong" type of questions or way to do things in climbing. You always learn from other people.
4. Climbing is not a contact sport... guess that takes away a lot of anger right there

happy climbing,
Sparhawk

Well, for starters, if you're a unreliable, unpleasant jerk, good luck finding somebody to belay you. The necessity having and being a partner one can trust with one's life as entry fee to the sport cuts out a lot of the worst kind of folks.

We're a community, we need each other. If climbers weren't willing to help other climbers, there would be a lot of dead climbers and more limited access. good things happen when we work together.

Oh yeah, if anybody wants to help a fellow climber, I have a posted message asking for help from people who climb at Taylors Falls in MInnesota. Its in the ROUTES section under minnesota and Taylors Falls and I really do need the help.
