Fishwrap Editors: Quit Obscuring the Cover with Headlines

Does anyone from R&I actually read this board?

You know what would make me actually pay for this fishwrap instead of reading it cover to cover at the counter? Leave the headlines pimping articles off...I KNOW you have articles inside that are the best thing since the constant angle cam was discovered. I KNOW you're going to tell me about the ten hardest seminude foreign trad teenage ascents.

Just put your title in modest print at the top of the cover, put the goddamn barcode on the back, and capture my interest with cover photos of scantily clad climbers doing what they do best.

I'm sure the marketing department will fight you on this. Have some freaking sac and tell them to can it and see how the numbers do.

Awhile back Climbing was doing a thing were they sent subscribers to the mag different issues (void of all text on the cover except the name) than they sold the general public. Excellent idea and I bought a subscription for that very reason. They quit doing it and I stopped subscribing. Now the only mags I get are the ones with the magazine names removed so that the shops can give them away for free.

Yeah, that idea lasted at least 1 or 2 issues to suck people in.

Its a revolutionary idea that just goes against the prevailing wisdom of the marketers. Just buck the trend for a while is my suggestion. Rather than promote an esthetic of clean, dramatic beauty, they think they need to scream out for attention with top ten lists and glory hounding DANGER HERE headlines.

It's outragous, its pernicious, its odious, offensive, repugnant and contemptible.

It costs beaucoup $$ to do those headline-free covers, hence the reason you don't see them around much anymore. I think it's a great idea. I'm with you. But the reality is ...

I love the black diamond gear catalogue, and almost solely for this reason. They put a tiny title on it, and the rest is a sweet picture. Immediately grabs my attention. And then they have so many pages with just great pics on them, and maybe a small quote, and nothing else. The good stuff.

Yeah, the best climbing periodicals by rar right now are the catalogs, for articles and pictures.

Oops! Busted! wigglestick only buys pirated magazines! Don't say it too loud, you'll get your local shop in trouble.

Why would it cost any more to not put all those headlines on the cover? If anything, you're paying less in graphic design fees....

It costs extra to pay the printer for two runs of a magazine, instead of one run. Extra setup costs, etc. It would also cost extra to have the two runs packaged and labelled differently, and then have to deal with the occasional mistake, when someone gets the wrong cover, and on and on and on. These things are incredibly low-margin, with an obscene amount built into the production cost of every issue to account for the waste of unsold units. They're micro-niche magazines, and are probably barely even paying for themselves, much less making anyone rich. I suspect that's one reason that they have a fairly high turnover in staff; they have to eventually go on to a job that can pay real money.

i agree. but i guess climbing magazines are just like any other magazine... easy to read and packed full of advertisements. i'd respect and buy a climbing magazine that didn't have so much cosmo-esque garbage on the cover...

I agree. The covers would be so much better if they left off all that garbage and just stuck with their title and a good photo.

Understood. But I never said anything about two runs. I want all the covers, subscribed or newsstand, to be clean.

Not likely, I understand. FWIW, I do think R&I is far better than climbing these days, especially since it was bought from Old Macdonald (who did a decent job also) and the best of the Climbing folks came over. Overall its cleaner, more professional and a bit less tabloid than the alternative.

Its just porn, no more no less.

Wow, you're right. Thanks for the wake up call. I'm headed to the Ladies Room right now to get a one these things--it's called a "life", you say?

Might I add another lame 70s putdown? That's way more than I needed to know!
