My Petzl Corax Harness

Ok, I was recomended to get a Corax harness because of its comfortability and its versitility. So, I got one, but testing it at home, it has been anything but comfortable. My guess is that I am doing something wrong. The leg loops dig into my inner thigh quite badly when I sit back in it on a rope. I am seeing this as quite odd because I have heard nothing but of how comfortable it is.

So, any suggestions or help would be greatly appriciated.

I have no idea what you are doing wrong, but I've never had a problem like that with mine.

Make sure you are not getting the leg loops too tight or twisted. It is easy to get them twisted on that harness. I have the Petzl Chalidris which is almost the same (different waist belt). My son has the Corax, I find them both to be quite comfortable. :D

Funny you mention this, I noticed the same thing when I got one for Christmas.

I swapped mine out for a Misty Mountain Cadillac, which cost me another $25, but I figure my last harness lasted a long time...The Caddy is way plush, but the bulk doesn't bother me. I don't even notice it when I'm climbing.

Anyway, if you can't return the Corax, you might find when you get on routes that you don't notice it digging in like you do when you're doing a dead hang in it. It is lighter than other padded harnesses...

I have the Corax and it is quite comfortable. Sounds like you have the leg loops backwards - perhaps from twisting.

Dave...

P.S. It is always a good idea to hang in the harness at the store before buying. Some shops don't let you, but many do because you usually can't return it.

Yo dude, I just snagged another harness from rei and the guy who works there explained to me how that harness sorta sucks. It tends to dig into alot of peoples thigh's and from what I have heard, breaks alot of blood vessels in a fall. Obviously Petzl's higher pricing on harnesses doesn't mean higher quality really. If I were you I would return it and then save some money and go with a singing rock harness. They are cheaper and more comfortable. Just as many features.

i wonder... the people who did not like are you umm skinny or umm larger?

well, I guess i'll try to return it. although i'm not so sure I will be able to :(

I have the Caldris version and it didn't work for me either. I would say I'm of average size 5'10", 160#. Almost every harness that I have owned has been more comfortable. It took me a while to realize that this harness wasn't working for me. I replaced it with a Yates Astroman (not a fair comparison), but also regularly climb in 1994ish BD Mentor. The Mentor is much more comfortable for me and lighter too. The problem with me was with the leg loops. They were not comfortable when weighted.

argh, this will be anoying if i can't return it

oooooo *looks at the back of the REI recept*
it says, "our 100% guarantee ensures that every item you purchase at REI meets your high standards--or you can return it for a replacement or refund"

well, I can definatly say that it did not meet up to my standards

humm well this looks promising

**edit**
oh and for a replacemet harness, someone mentioned singing rock harnesses. I am not too familier with those.
What about black dimond harnesses? Like the Momentum AL?
or perhaps any other suggestions.

That is weird. I own one and like it very much. Maybe it is not for everyone like you have said.
Survivalexpert, when they told you that the petzl wasn´t so good, which one told you was a better choice?

petzl corax is extremely comfortable. check that your leg loops are not twisted... you tighten them on the outside of your leg, pulling backwards. the thin part comes to the inside of the thigh.

I have the Calidris and I kinda have the same problem. I'm really skinny though. The back of my leg loops kinda dig in a little when i'm standing up belaying, so now I instinctually lift my legs up and lean back now whenever I catch some weight.

It's a good harness, but Petzl should change their padding on the leg loops.

Your rise is incorrectly adjusted
The leg loops should be closer towards your knee not your crotch, you can tighten the rope locator on the bottom part of your tie in points to give you some extra legnth.
Then make sure the back elastic straps are tight enought to keep you sitting in the harness. The leg loops should cradel you in a SITTING position an incorrectly adjusted harness will keep you more upright and in extreme discomfort. The owners manula shows this as well.

A more padded harness allows more room for error when fitting a harnesshence why many people feel they are more comfortable.

My main complaint about my Corax isn't that it is uncomfortable (although it certainly was the first few times I wore it), but that the height of the leg loops are adjusted by a plastic clip on the back which has come undone mid-route a couple of times by my Camelback hitting it. Fortunately Petzl has corrected this design, but anyone looking at this harness, I advise to be aware of the plastic clip (some shops probably still carry the older Corax and Caladirs) - they only changed the design I think in the last year or two (that is probably why I got such a good pro deal on it - I guess you get what you pay for).

ok i'm pretty busy right now, but I spent a couple of minutes with it and what you said, mustclimb69, seemed to have been the problem. So, thanks a lot 8)

What I need to do is mess around with it for a bit and try to find the right position for the leg loops. You said that they should be "closer towards your knee not your crotch." I realize it probably varies depending on the person, but is there any way you could give me a better estimate, as it would help a lot. About the owners manual, I didn't see anything refering to adjusting the rise.

mega, about the plastic clip, I think mine must be the newer version. :)

You are right about REI taking returns ... even a used harness. I think all the REI stores have a rope hanging from a roof I-beam for evaluating harness comfort. Definately use it.

I can confidently recommend the Black Diamond BOD harness (not the alpine). It may not be the lightest but it is extremely comfortable. The leg loops are adjustable and the waist belt is padded. The adjustable loops are a real plus because it can adapt to different layers of clothing. Many times I start the day cold and peel to just shorts by mid-afternoon.

Retails at REI for about $50 but when on sale it go's for $35.

Good Luck.

i love my corax. i find it extremely comfy. i am very tall and skinny; i am 6'2" but wear a small harness set as tight as possible.

i think any comfort issues are from sitting incorrectly. when i first started climbing i kinda hung standing up. that hurt a lot. then i figured out to sit like my ass was in a bucket, and i am much more comfortable.
