What type of climbing do you prefer? It all depends...
Just don't say, "long, overhanging routes." You're in the wrong neck of the coastal desert.

If you don't mind leaving the shoes and chalk at home, the bouldering on the beach at La Jolla is well worth a look. Awesome slopers, hueco-like pockets, cracks. Just don't try to crimp anything- it will break.

I dunno, i'll go for just about anything, except bouldering. Sport or Trad, doesn't matter.
I've been to mt Woodson once, i thought it was very nice. What are other areas like?

esoteric's right; the best climbing around san diego is j-tree and idyllwild, each a mere 2 hours away.
but while you're in the county, you have some options. woodson's great, but sometimes there are issues finding what you want. it's best to go with someone who knows the area.
mission gorge has a good mix of sport and trad, and the pdfs online at SDCC are great. slicker rock than most are used to.
less popular is poway crags, which you'd love if you like 5.10 and over sport. also, the longest, best trad line in san diego is there, "godzilla."
you can always pick up the san diego climber's guide at a local shop, but it's a bit out of date, and once SDCC gets around to it they'll have all the good places topo'd for free.
or just go to j-tree; you'll be happier

dont forget that place in jamul... I believe its access sensitive, but if you quiet, im sure you can sneak a handful of good trad leads in.
locked gate at the botom of the aproach. gnarley 4wd will get you in to the right.

Aside from Rainbow, Woodson is San Diego's best offering. The La Jolla beach boldering is a bad joke at best. Poway crags burned recently, dunno how access is... If you're adventurous there's some good backcountry-ish stuff as well.
Mission Gorge is ok if you have no other options but that said I never go there.
Lemme know if you want more info or someone to climb with while you're here.

Thanks for the link (and for letting me jump in on this thread :oops: ) crazygirl, we are probably going to Mission as it is close to where we are staying, and we aren't specfically traveling for climbing--looks like this should be a fun day trip!

El Cajon Mtn. is the latest hot spot among those I know, but I have no beta for you as I haven't made the trek yet.
Woodsen is great if you like to knock out a few short ones in a day. If you can handle them, Eric's Face, Seminar Wall, and Uncertainty Principle are worth checking out. Bear in mind that Woodsen 5.11 is in a class of its own.
Mission Gorge sucks, and Poway Crags got burned pretty bad in the fires. I went up there a little while back and was pulling holds off left and right as the rock was cracked from the heat. A lot of the lower bolts also got charred pretty good, though they seem solid enough.
If you want to make sure to get in some indisputably sick climbing, head to Jtree.

No, it's a couple hours north. J Tree, Tahquitz, or Suicide for trad. New Jack City, Echo Cliffs, Williamson for sport.

Thats a huge assumption. I will have to admit that my mistake was also to make a blanket statement in saying that Mission Gorge sucks.
Now admitting my wrong and moving forward, I insist that Mission Gorge sucks. And dont even try to tell me that it takes no technique to climb at the other places I mentioned. Why don't you go ahead and leave your technique at the bottom of Seminar Wall and see how far you get?

I bouldered there about four weeks ago. Rainbow is awsome granite bouldering but it is on private land and is posted no trespassing. That being the case, giving directions to it on the internet is probably not a real smart idea. :wink:
