You have to pay your dues. Hang out for a while, get to know people, let people get to know you. Find out what you want to do and why, then PM an admin about it.
The admins also generally recruit based on whatever 'balance' they feel the website needs. It's not like I was waving my hand frantically for this thankless job.

I can't answer the exact "how to be a mod" question as I do not yet know my ass from a hole in the ground, but that will not stop me nor any internet denzion from spewing: so I shall.
I just want to state that all of us on the site know those f*uckers are getting rich, so I don't blame you for wanting to be a mod. The money is good, yes: but most of these folks just do it for the adulation of their peers and the overwhelming appreciation feedback they recieve. Money is a side benefit of course.
So remember: get rich, have fun.
Doesn't get better than that.
