I am a rookie climber who doesn't quite know what she is into yet, but I am looking for a partner around the Gettysburg/Hanover area. Hopefully someone who knows the local places or be willing to try them out with me. My email address is firegirl2546@hotmail.com. ~Kimberly~

I'd excersie extreme caution before climbing with someone I don't know! Even if they are well known on rc.com. I won't climb a toprope without looking at the anchor. I don't trust belays from people I have not seen belay before. The risks are high and the ground is hard. Try your local gym, learn from someone that can be trusted. Close enough isn't always good enough. I'm not trying to discurage you in the least. Try reading John Longs how to rock climb to learn the basics.

Just a quick word of advice. Climbing at Devil's Den is probably not the best idea due to its Civil War history and the amount of people who lost their lives there. The park rangers don't mind if you explore in the area, but as soon as you put on a pair of climbing shoes, you are asking for trouble. Good luck finding a partner and some good places to learn!!!

Boss, you are wrong. It is permitted to climb there, just no chalk or ropes. Kimberly, I live in York and climb all over Central PA and the country for that matter. Drop me a line, I'll teach you whatever you want to know.:-)

Check out the Routes Database for SCPA. http://rockclimbing.com/routes/listState.php?CountryStateID=44 It has some good info on places to go. I'm from SWPA, so I don't get over your way much. As for Gettysburg, I've been to Devils Den. I won't climb there, mainly out of respect.

Lonny Whitcomb, Regional Access Fund Coordinator, has been in discussion with the park, but it is very unlikely that they will ever officially permit climbing. Currently, it is left up to the individual rangers to interpret enforcement. Some don't mind climbers, some will ask you to leave, and some will FINE you. Yes, I have friends that were fined at Devil's Den for bouldering, and it was not cheap. On another note, were you at Climbnasium last night? I was hanging out in the bouldering room.

Just curious, but I wonder if a guy gets this many responses right away to a request for a partner.
