Do women free-solo? I've never really heard any women who do. I know there are some amazing female climbers out there, but it seems like a girl soloing a route is a pretty rare thing.

This isn't just a guy thing is it?

Lisa Rands I think does some really high ball stuff that could be considered free solos.

dingus is (as usual) right on the money: it's a gender thing. allow me to elaborate.

women lack testicles. the lack of a hairy pair of doo-dads means the inability to produce large amounts of the testosterone. medical researchers (as well as producers of such tv shows as [i:dd88bd0838]jackass[/i:dd88bd0838]) refer to testosterone as the [i:dd88bd0838]stupid[/i:dd88bd0838] hormone, for its ability to make men do, well ... stupid things. in fact the reason why there are more women than men on this green earth is pretty much entirely due to the fact we're driven to, say, hold lit cherry bombs between our ass cheeks, bed the boss's daughter, and free solo.

fret not, however, because evolutionarily speaking, women have compensated quite well for the absence of a pair of hairy ones by developing the ability to think and reason. unlike their nut-bearing, hairy-backed counterparts, those of the fairer sex are able to look at a chunk of stone and say to themselves, "damn. i need a rope."

Plenty of women free solo. I can remember one week in Bishop with several stout women free soloing, and there are a couple members here who saw three women soloing on a regular basis at Joshua Tree last year before they took off on a road trip.

My GF free-solos, my ex GF free-solos. Just about every woman that I have ever climbed with over the years has free-soloed to one extent or another.

A lot of it is comes down to what you are exposed to and what you let yourself believe is possible.

The idea that the only super women like Steph and Lynn free-solo isn't even close to being accurate.

let me preface my comment by saying i've never met steph or know anything about her other than watching her through media and reading her articles.

That said, Steph Davis is the most pathetic climber on this earth. Watch her video on the black diamond website. She acts like climbing is some great thing that she just happened to stumble upon, when in reality, everyone knows climbing is absurd and pointless activity that does nothing good for humans. The wind blows through her hair, (cue techno music) and she narrates her own video like the annoying girl who always raises her hand in english class.

Her writing is equally as terrible. It's full of metaphors that are out of place and showy. Everyone knows that no one likes reading metaphors unless they are written by hulking men with huge nuts like John Long.

Other than that, I'm sure women do a lot of "first female" free-solos. When is there going to be a female that starts doing stuff that isn't labeled as "first female" ascents. The "first female lesbian dyke out atop mt. everest." how exciting. come on girls, start climbing to prove yourselves

Come down to So Cal, I'm sure a lot of girls would like to show you how they climb.

But we don't need to prove ourselves to you or to anyone. We do it because we love to climb, period.

So get off your high horse and go climb a f**kin rock.

Caterhine Destivelle and a English female climber (whose name escapes my memory) solo the Eiger North Face. Didn't Wanda (polish climber) also did some solo in Himalya?

hyhuu ... soloing is not the same as free soloing.

Hell, even Zabrok can solo ... but take away his rope, and he cries like the little girls he chases.

Good stuff geo, but here's where you're wrong.

I have yet to meet one reasonable woman in my entire life. And speak for youself, my back isn't hairy.

soloing is not the most publicized form of climbing and most climbers are not famous ... I'll bet there are plenty of fem soloists.

there's a climbing film shown at yosemite lodge about modern yosemite climbers. there was a portion showing a tan, long-haired, bare-backed climber. I was debating whether it was a woman or man. finally the person falls like 3-7 ft. and catches him/herself by hands on a ledge. the climber's chest is bare too. I think it was Dan Osman.

Steph D. freesolos, but she's one of the most publicized women climbers out there. Strong, undeniably, but not the only one. I am sure lots of women freesolo.

(I am not one of them, because I am a ninny)

Yeah, they do, And oh! what style,
A Yosemite local and good friend of mine was climbing the Royal Arches one day, when out of nowhere a nude female soloist passed him with some impressive stemming action  No joke. Perhaps one of those female firsts that was being discussed

mountainchick82- right on.

A couple of years ago, at the Gallery out in Red Rocks, there was some lass warming up for a shot at the Gift. She did so by soloing up and down the 5.9's and 10s at the left end of the wall. Saw the same girl doing hard things on big stone out in the Valley a few months before.... and she had a lot of fem friends who looked even more honed than she....

I suppose they would, if they had big egos, were insecure, or their boyfriends broke up with them.
