music eh? rock, hard, soft, and screaming in your face. all good.

but when camping, keep the music down low enough that campers in teh next site cant hear it. it is obnoctious to be blaring music while someone is sleeping. and if yoru camping.....y bring the music? didn't God make enough things out there to make music for ya? but while climbing or at teh gym, ROCK ON.

I'm not making this up, we have a very specific CD that we made specifically for climbing. Apty title PHAT, it contains such classics as The Ho Song (Ludacris), Happy Happy Joy Joy (Ren and Stimpy), The Pirate Song, (Ray Stevens), Ace of Spades (Motorhead), Some really old yodelling cowboys, When the City Sleeps (PJ Harvey), The Good The Bad and The Ugly theme song, Hit me baby one more time - as covered by Type O negative, One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer (george thourogood), and King of the Road (Roger Miller), Star Wars Gangsta Rap, and a few others I can't remember. Sing alongs are mandatory. You will climb better with the PHAT cd. This is fact.

Or this.

Trance (techno) or punk at the gym and nothing but nature's music at the crags.

something noisy for sure, gotta be psyched up. Ska is good to get you pumped, and has good rythm too (operation Ivy and the like). Good punk also does the trick (rancid, lagwagon, old offspring). Sometimes nothing will do but good ol' heavy/speed metal (metalica, megadeth, suicidal tendencies) Dead Kennedys is also a sure bet.

They play music at the gym, but I hardly notice, it's all just background noise to me. Once in a while I will hear something between burns and think "Hey, that's a cool song", but other than that, I don't know it is there.

As far as climbing outdoors, or camping, I don't take a radio with me. I am out, away from the world we live in for a reason, don't need to take all that with me. It is a very cleansing experiance. Anyways, who would want to lug a ghetto blaster the hour plus to my projects?

I like something loud, incoherent and angry to motivate me...for example, a Howard Dean speach.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I usually take a minidisc player and a small portable speaker with me while I'm hiking or climbing a mountain (anytime I'm not roped up). It kinda puts you into that "sure I can hike 40 miles today" tunnel-vision state. That or an audiobook, those really take your mind off the trail.
