Over a year ago I took a break from climbing for medical reasons and now that I'm back, I quickly brought up this site to see what's happening in the climbing world. It appears that this site has been taken over by really negitive people. Too bad, this use to be an informative site where people made friends, where trad, sport and bouldering all got along. Sad to see the site going downhill ... most climbers I meet are nothing like the ones I read here.

Oh Well ... maybe time to move on ... climb safer then you type!

Unfortunately, not everyone has something positive to offer.

If all one sees is negativity in a sea of positive and negative, then what does that say about the person? That would be you.

Take dingus' advice I would say...or readjust your glasses.

It's a lot more effective to encourage those you appreciate then to blandly denounce the whole site as a wash.

Thanks for the new emoticons! I can now express feelings of intense apprehension: :tinfoilhat: , annui: :boring: and condescension: :wtf:. Also, if I have an intense desire to slap lifeless equine testicles, finally, I have an outlet: :deadhorse: .

Alan,

Sorry to hear you feel that way. And, like Amber said, you're not the only one, to some degree. There are aspects of the site that are incredible - truly groundbreaking and exciting! Conversely, the negativity in certain forums has gotten out of hand, and trust me, it hasn't gone unnoticed. Although all of us unpaid volunteers can't run a utopia, we'd like to give back what we can, and with the hope that everyone does that, maybe the site will continue to grow and expand, in a positive light.

For me, some of the positive things have been: "partnering" (if that's not too strong a term) with Rock and Ice. The Routes database is undergoing some major restructuring which will take our greatest asset and literally make it 10x easier to navigate. Also, the Gear Reviews are growing at an exponential rate, and the quality of the reviews improves daily. Also, something I'm personally involved with, is the 2004-2005 calendar - our first ever! The photos being submitted are truly top quality, and literally some of the best climbing photographers out there are generously giving their pictures to us to publish - all in the name of "open source" climbing information.

It's not perfect, but the community here is pretty damn close. And, it's something I wouldn't give up for the world. Stick around and see where the 20,000+ registered users take us; and become involved and help become a vocal part of that majority. YOU really can make a difference.

That is all...

-Matt

the Evil Nazi Moderators have gone soft.

We're working on training everyone to goose step properly, so as to crush dissent, and offer a pleasant environment for tea parties and the exchange of happy puppy stories.

Oh, also, a quarter of a million visitors showed up and some were real pricks. But on the other hand guys like John Gill are actively helping straighten them out. Plus Eric (code monkey) is working on a tractable version of collaborative filtering so that the more noxious trolls... disappear.

We'll see. The novelty wears off of everything after a while, but I continue to enjoy meeting shit loads of people (some of whom are seriously strong climbers) through the site, even though it's a colossal waste of time.

*sigh*

I remember coming on this site on my old name before they reformatted it. Now it sucks...can't start a simple discussion without gettin a few idiotic replies. Sad is right..that's all I've noticed, I don't even think any of these people climb anymore I think they just sit online complaining.

Maybe it was just the shock of a "new face" that the flamers bring? Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and updates as to where the site is going and the quest for involvement. Hope the "code monkey” doesn’t get tendonitis from clacking the keys trying to clean this site for the climbing community. And, yes ... after being around for awhile again, I do see good advice, solid concerns and that I'm not alone!

See Ya On The Vertical Side!

What happened? Let's see:

**rrradam showed up and pissed off and insulted so many people that the best posters publicly announced they were leaving.

**rrradam, broganadams, et. al started a bunch of scandals involving inflating ratings of images and hacking into user's private email accounts. Despite committing federal crimes, they were subsequently promoted up the rc.com ladder--setting the tone for what would follow.

**The subhumans at rec.climbing ran everybody off the usenet climbing discussion group with their constant meanness. Hearing that their victims had found some sort of refuge at rockclimbing.com, like hungry wolves they followed their prey here. jt512, curt, etc. now carry on their juvenile self worship and their ritualistic slamming of anyone who posts that was all the rage at rec.climbing.

**trevor didn't care how or what users showed up nor what their morality was--as long as the site got more hits.

**The ninnies with "chick", "gurl", or "babe" in their usernames were rapidly moved up the chain of command in the way that sort of thing happens on the internet. I'm sure someone who picked a username like blonde_poosy69 would be running rc.com in a month.

Now, this cesspool is the state of climbing on the net. :D

IF only your code monkey could write something to allow each user to filter post by post, and thread by thread, the problems would largely be solved.

One way to enable this would be to write user preferences to the users hard drive, which would save a huge load of space on your servers.

The only other problem really is the recurrence of the same old thing over and over, but forum faqs and attaching repetitive posts to their respective parent threads would help with that.

As for the goose steppers, the politics, the PC police, the trolls the whinning, the flaming and all the soap opera stuff, hey it IS the internet, what did you expect?

I've found the forums to be largely informative and at times very entertaining. I add my own wisdom from time to time and am honestly appreciative of the advice I've gotten from others and from the gear reviews. Can't beat that with a wet sock....
