Didn't see a post about this anywhere in the searches I did so apologies in advance if this is a repeat.

Apparently Ammon was injured due to rockfall. I think his wife said that Ammon's helmet probably saved his life. He is going to be okay but is limping around and has some pretty good bruises, etc. from what I hear. I can't provide a link to the thread on Supertopo regarding Ammon beacuse ST is down for maintenance for the day. I am basically posting from memory here so I am sure someone that knows more details will correct me. I remember part of the thread that said Ammon and his partner rescued themselves before the SAR could get to them. I think he was on El Cap when the accident happened.

Anyway, send prayers and thoughts and good wishes his way.

Bad Joo Joo on all fronts last week, I suppose. Glad we didn't lose anyone. I'm sure Catra will respond as Ammon's still in Zion, but he was a lucky dude. Wear your helmet!

Consider it done.

If he was on Prodigal I bet I know exactly which pitch he was on. The bolt ladder on pitch 5 is at the spout of a rock funnel where everything knocked loose up above showers onto that one spot.

Bet noone in a hundred years will figure out what you mean by GPR.

I look forward to Ammon's TR on this incident. Sounds like he is well-versed in self-rescue also.

Let's hope he recovers quickly.

I heard about this a few days ago and, well, thank goodness Ammon has the sense to wear a helmet. Apparently the impact of the rockfall knocked him silly for a few seconds even with the helmet! Yes folks, there are many ways to get hurt or die, in Zion and elsewhere...

Best wishes to Ammon, it was great to meet you at RRR, and I'm sorry to hear about this recent misfortune, but pleased that your injuries were not severe. Get well like you climb -- fast!

I think he and Brian were on an FA project, not on Prodigal from what a mutual friend told me.

Either way, glad he's still among us. He's as tough as they come so I'm sure he'll be back on the rock in no time. Hell, I remember about this time last year in the valley he was doing a speed ascent on Shortest Straw, hold came loose and he messed up his finger badly and they had to bail. The next day he grabbed his partner and went up to Wet Denim Daydream and set a new speed record on it. Bad finger and all.

Good vibes comin your way man  .....

I know what your refering too on pitch 5 on Prodigal Son - might as well be an avalanche shoot! Got nailed in the head and saw some stars a year and 1/2 back! Glad I got enough brains to wear a hemet. Glad to know that Ammon did too!
Helmets are a saving grace once in a while!

Speedy Recovery Ammon!

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all the positive notes on my injuries. Ive been doing much better in the last few days.

I'm writing a report about exactly what happened..... so, you're going to have to wait a bit longer to get the juicy details. I do have to clear a few things up, though.

Brian and I were on the third pitch of the Dunn Route when a huge flake/block pulled. Brian was climbing 60 feet, or so, above me and I was belaying. I got hit with the majority of the rock. First impact... my helmet. My right shoulder and back get pretty beat up, as well. A long with my right ankle. I was knocked unconcious for about 5 minutes. We were able to self rescue ourselves and want to publicly thank Christian and a climber (I can't remember his name) for coming off Prodigal to see if we were ok.

The two pieces of equipment that made the difference was a Gri-gri and my helmet. It would have been a much different scene if not for these tools.

Oh, we were just up on a new route on Spearhead the day before this happened. That's probably where the confusion came from.

Stay tuned for the report and thanks to everyone that was thoughtfull enough to wish me a speedy recovery.

Cheers, Ammon
