From what I've read so far those are what's recommended for beginning mountaineering/alpine, but I'm curious as to how aggressive a mountaineering axe to get (CM Guide axe vs raven/pamir) and the same with the crampons, the BD Contacts dont seem well suited for when the ice steepens, but then most of the routes I'd start with probably be mostly snow/ice slope slogging. I'm not going to jump out on mixed stuff just yet... Thanks for any input

You do not need to buy starter stuff nor do you need to buy multiple items. I bought a pair of Grivel Crampons, the G-14's and have used them to Climb Orizaba in Mexico or Ice Climb In Colorado. As far as an axe goes I WOULD BUY THE LIGHTEST AXE YOU CAN, IT DOES MAKE A DIFERANCE. However the most important thing with an axe is length, to long of an axe on steep stuff can suck. Too short on level ground sucks just as bad. The new axe ski /pole combo by Petzl looks interesting but it just came out so who knows how it will actually perform. I use a BD Raven Pro its light and durable.

I found the Saber's on sale at www.killerdeals.com - anybody have an older set of tools they'd like to part with? (Pulsar's, Black Prophets, Shrikes, etc)

Charlet Black Ice crampons, and a nice light axe. The Black Ice's are great on soft ice, and general mountaineering. Don't worry about the Guide axe, if you do need a technical axe i think you'd be bringing another tool or 2 to suit the task. Just my $.02.

If you like the Charlet crampons, skip the old black ice & get the new / lighter vasak series/model. The Raven is a great choice for mountaineering. It's light and has a nice smooth head for pain free plunging
