when toproping are you getting the workout that sporting, trading,or bolding should give you.My question is does toproping give you a good workout.I know it gives you a decent workout but compared to sport, trad, and boldering is it?

It's a great work out. Good for endurance and technique.

re : Endurance only...

Better than bouldering, as you spend less time on a boulder problem.

Less than Sport(barely) or Trad as you need more endurance to stop and make the clips or place pro while climbing.

TPing is a good work out. You work most of you muscle groups, as well as build endurance (sp). Plus it's fun.

I've commented on a topic like this before...I have found that toproping can be a FANTASTIC workout if you work the route several times (going up and down without a rest) and downclimbing makes for a high heart rate as well. This is especially effective if you climb at a gym where the actual height of the walls is not that tall.

Heck ya,
Toproping is great practice. It gets you up harder stuff that you would'nt be able to lead. Which in turn is a good work out.

You can definitely climb faster and harder on toprope. You can even turn a pitch into an aerobic workout, something that's pretty hard to do on lead. If you fire up the climb, then get lowered quickly, and then do it again, and again, I guarantee you will get your workout.

Top Roping is a great work out.
If I'm in Yosemite and doing single pitch climbs, I'll lead them and then set up a top rope and work the climb. It helps to build the muscles and skill and after top toping a climb a few times it makes the next lead up it a bit easier.

In my local gym I climb laps on almost all the walls. The ceiling isn't very tall so my belayer and I see how many walls each can climb in an allotted amount of time. It makes for a good workout. Usually after a few laps on a tough pitch, I'm feeling pretty worked. I then like to finish that off with some bouldering (not working problems, just moving), this is usually enough to make me want to give myself a rest. I say if you're looking for endurance, climb laps, it has helped me.

On TR you can do alot of fun stuff that cant be done on trad or isnt bolted. Ans why are you worried if its a good work out why dont you climb the route because it looks like it would be fun

I agree with what everyone has said above. One thing that im not sure was mentioned was that top roping (at least for me) allows you to extend or improve your mental barriers. Whenever im on lead, the fear of a large fall usually hinders my climbing ability. If there is a tight line attached to me at all times, it gives me the security to battle some moves that I might have had trouble with on lead. From top rope training, ive felt more secure with some of the deadpoints that ive made and im trying them out with a more positive aspect while on lead.

I love to finish the night at the climbing gym with laps until I have nothing left in me.

I've herd that some pro's like lynn hill train like that. they climb to the top of a route, down climb, then hop on the next route and do it again.
